Chats don’t have to be online: A newspaper finds success with its downtown news cafe

Chats don’t have to be online: A newspaper finds success with its downtown news cafe | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
The Winnipeg Free Press's cafe has increased reader engagement, helped social media efforts, and apparently made some fine sandwiches.

Not long ago, the Winnipeg Free Press’s social media editor hosted an online chat from her desk at the paper’s downtown news cafe. She had done it many times in recent months but something unexpected happened.

People had taken up the paper’s social media invitation to “join us” in a chat about Google+ with guests including GigaOM’s Mathew Ingram. But audience members started showing up at the cafe in person saying, “I’m here for the chat!”...

Reporters Without Borders suspends WikiLeaks mirror site | Media news | Journalism.co.uk | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Press freedom group Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has temporarily suspended its WikiLeaks mirror site following a decision by the group to publish its full trove of 251,000 unredacted US diplomatic cables.

In a statement issued late yesterday (1 September), RSF said it took the decision to suspend the site which was set up in December last year while the protection of sources "is in question"....

92 % of journalists have a LinkedIn account.

15-Seconds Blog: You Can't Make This Stuff Up

15-Seconds Blog: You Can't Make This Stuff Up | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Well, when dealing with the media -- you can but you shouldn't.

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis was taking part in a media Q&A breakfast on Wednesday when she got what appeared to be an unexpected softball question.

She was questioned about the vehicle she arrived in. Rather than rolling up in a big, black armored limousine, Solis came in a relatively small silver Chevy Equinox.

Hmmm. Not so fast, Secretary...

My Three Cents: If You’ve Never Failed, You’ve Never Lived

...My first assignment was to write a press release. I gave the initial draft to my boss, who took up a pencil and — with two vicious slashes — cut the paper to ribbons, while shouting: “This is awful! Garbage! Do it over! Do it right!” I rewrote the draft and brought it back to him. Five more times. Each time he tore it to bits, excoriating me for my “ineptitude.” I was near tears — and close to quitting — when a co-worker suggested I give the boss my first draft. “Maybe he’ll approve it this time,” she said. I took her up on her suggestion … and he did!

Gallup poll: More people have a negative view of PR and advertising

Among 25 industries in the U.S., public relations and advertising ranked 16th in terms of the public’s positive view. The industries’ image has seen an overall decline since 2001.

Not surprising given poor corporate leadership and the constant litany of PR fails and sometimes questionable ethics...

Student: I want to tell the truth about journalism that nobody wants to say | Poynter.

...All of that stuff is on us, the journalists. It’s our fault. Our job was to report the news, and we did that. But we got complacent, and we stopped evolving, and soon the concept of a news article became far removed from what you, as a person, valued. Now we find ourselves in an awkward position where an indispensable component of democracy is slipping away, and we’re scrambling....

The 'high quality Web content' experiment has *not* failed - but some news publishers have

...Sixty's a gargantuan staff for a Web-only publication - one that could be supported only by a global publication with a worldwide advertiser base. Don't blame the Web for Slate's decision to operate with a too-large staff for the advertiser base its audience would support. That's Slate's bad call. (Blame Slate, too, for turning off the audience it could have had. I - and many others, I suspect - gave up long ago on Slate's smug brand of neo-liberal contrarianism, honed under the direction of former editor Jacob Weisberg.)

This has become standard repertoire on OJR, but plenty of people are making plenty of money with Web content. And millions of readers are enjoying rich conversations online, featuring voices of individuals whose experiences too often were not heard or told by newsrooms of Slate's size and larger....
