Twitter's Longer Tweet Format Gets a Qualified Thumbs-Up - eMarketer

Twitter's Longer Tweet Format Gets a Qualified Thumbs-Up - eMarketer | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Is a longer tweet a better tweet?

Twitter recently allowed a limited number of users to double the number of characters permitted per tweet to 280—hardly an epic length, but still a significant change for the ultra-short-form social platform. In announcing the change in late September, Twitter said company research showed that users were frustrated by the 140-character limit. If the test is a success, it will get a full rollout.

Morning Consult surveyed US internet users about the change this month and found a generally positive response, with those who expressed support clearly outweighing those who did not. Younger users in particular were supportive, with 41% of respondents ages 18 to 29 having at least a somewhat positive reaction to the change, and just 14% expressing reservations....

ICFJ: Newsrooms Around the World Are Falling Behind in Digital Era - MediaShift | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Despite great strides, journalists around the world are not keeping pace with the transformations of the digital era. That is the conclusion of the first-ever global study on how news media are adopting new technologies, conducted by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ).

Against this background of immense challenges for the news industry, there is some good news: Digital news is making tremendous headway worldwide.

The journalism community has long discussed how the digital revolution is impacting news media. Our study, The State of Technology in Global Newsrooms, focuses on a missing link in this debate: What technologies are journalists around the world using and how?

We conducted the survey in 12 languages, and heard from more than 2,700 newsroom managers and journalists from 130 countries. This massive response identifies specific challenges the industry faces: a technology gap, unmet training needs, lack of audience engagement, concerns about building trust, an information security shortfall, and new revenue streams. The study also identifies the digital leaders and laggards....

How to Create a Wiki with WordPress

How to Create a Wiki with WordPress | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

While WordPress is, at its heart, a user-generated content platform, you are that user. (And maybe your team, if you have one.) With a wiki, that can expand to your audience becoming that user, which opens up a lot of possibilities for your brand and content.

If you create a wiki, I’m sure you’ll find lots of benefits and uses, but really, I think these are the major ones.

- easy to understand and to update

- easy to read and to write - collaborative

- oozing with SEO authority

- dead simple to navigate and plan content

- absolutely amazing for regularly updated documentation

- great for tracking living and evolving projects with multiple teams and team members.

With WordPress as your base, you’re not limited to wiki software, either. You get the best of both worlds–WP’s robust ecosystem and the simplicity and utility of a wiki. As always, you should use the right tool for the job.

That said, there are a few ways to create a wiki using WordPress, but the main two are either by installing a theme or by using a plugin. Imagine that!...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

A very creative idea and could be a big boost to some Businesses.

Facebook takes down data and thousands of posts, obscuring reach of Russian disinformation

Facebook takes down data and thousands of posts, obscuring reach of Russian disinformation | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Social media analyst Jonathan Albright got a call from Facebook the day after he published research last week showing that the reach of the Russian disinformation campaign was almost certainly largerthan the company had disclosed. While the company had said 10 million people read Russian-bought ads, Albright had data suggesting that the audience was at least double that — and maybe much more — if ordinary free Facebook posts were measured as well.

Albright welcomed the chat with three company officials. But he was not pleased to discover that they had done more than talk about their concerns regarding his research. They also had scrubbed from the Internet nearly everything — thousands of Facebook posts and the related data — that had made the work possible.

Never again would he or any other researcher be able to run the kind of analysis he had done just days earlier.

“This is public interest data,” Albright said Wednesday, expressing frustration that such a rich trove of information had disappeared — or at least moved somewhere the public can’t see it. “This data allowed us to at least reconstruct some of the pieces of the puzzle. Not everything, but it allowed us to make sense of some of this thing.”...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Facebook said it squashed “a bug.” Researchers say it is hiding crucial information. Talk about covering your ass. Fakebook is the only way to describe this move.

5 Content Marketing Trends You Should Know

5 Content Marketing Trends You Should Know | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Content marketing is at a critical inflection point. For it to serve as the fuel and infrastructure for modern marketing departments, some things need to change. Brands are not getting much of a return on that investment. We know this thanks to a survey of 252 marketing leaders at Fortune 500 conducted by BrightEdge (one of my clients).

Some key findings:

- 71% of marketers say that less than half of their content is being consumed

- Fewer than 9% of marketers report three-quarters or more of the content they produce is engaged with

- The B2C content consumption rate was slightly better than B2B.

Three ways people fumble their personal brand strategy

Three ways people fumble their personal brand strategy | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Since I published my book KNOWN, I’ve had an incredible amount of fun coaching dozens of people through a process to create a profound online presence. I’m starting to see that there are three specific issues where people get stuck when embarking on their personal brand strategy. Today, I’m going to name these three areas and propose some ways for you to get “unstuck” if you’re experiencing these problems.

The building blocks

Before we go through the three common problems. Let’s review the primary process behind the book, as a reference. Every person who becomes “known” in their field follows four steps:

“PLACE” — Not necessarily a “passion,” but a sustainable interest — it’s your story, what you want to be known for.

“SPACE” — Where do you tell this story? Can you find a niche that is uncontested or under-served?

“CONTENT” — The fuel of a personal brand strategy is consistent content — written, audio, or video.

“ACTIONABLE AUDIENCE” — In the book I show how a social media audience is passive and I demonstrate how to build a tribe that can help support your goals....

Mark Schaefer says people are bumping up against three hurdles as they try to determine their personal brand strategy. Here are some ideas to overcome and break though!

10 Video Marketing Metrics to Help Establish ROI | 60 Second Marketer @AskJamieTurner

10 Video Marketing Metrics to Help Establish ROI | 60 Second Marketer @AskJamieTurner | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

For digital marketers, video represents a unique opportunity. Brand films don’t only attract and hold attentions far better than written or image based content, they also encourage a deeper and more meaningful engagement with audiences. With YouTube democratising the playing field, businesses big and small have the opportunity to grow huge audiences online.

When it comes to consumer engagement though, YouTube is only the tip of the iceberg. Social video gains a staggering 1200% more shares than text and image based content combined. Just look at this screenshot from Sprout Social’s Facebook stats to see how video puts other social content types in the shade.

Of course, video can be a tricky thing to pin down when it comes to ROI. Unlike search engine optimisation and paid advertising, video’s effects aren’t as easily trackable online and, along with the continuing misconception that it is prohibitively expensive, it’s perhaps no wonder that so many smaller companies are still resisting video.

Naturally, as a video marketer myself, I’d like to address these concerns, so in this article for the 60 Second Marketer, I’m going to walk you through the most common video marketing metrics to factors into your content strategy when establishing your goals and KPIs....

Blubrry is awesome. Far more than a delicious fruit rich in antioxidants or the name of what I dream Violet Beauregard would call a new tech start-up, Blubrry is the parent company of the scrumdiddlyumptious PowerPress plugin that gives WordPress audiophiles full control of their audio files.

Unlike services such as Libsyn and Soundcloud, which can link to your WordPress site, Blubrry PowerPress lets your primary interaction with your podcast be where you’re obviously most comfortable–your very own WordPress dashboard.

What is Blubrry PowerPress, Exactly?

In a nutshell, Blubrry PowerPress an all-in-one plugin that lets you upload, host, and publish a podcast entirely from your WordPress website. Exclusive: Even Pokémon Go used by extensive Russian-linked meddling effort | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Russian efforts to meddle in US politics didn't end at Facebook and Twitter. The tentacles of one campaign extended to YouTube, Tumblr and even Pokémon Go!

One Russian-linked campaign posing as part of the Black Lives Matter movement used Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr and Pokémon Go and even contacted some reporters in an effort to exploit racial tensions and sow discord among Americans, CNN has learned.

The campaign, titled "Don't Shoot Us," offers new insights into how Russian agents created a broad online ecosystem where divisive political messages were reinforced across multiple platforms, amplifying a campaign that appears to have been run from one source -- the shadowy, Kremlin-linked troll farm known as the Internet Research Agency.

A source familiar with the matter confirmed to CNN that the Don't Shoot Us Facebook page was one of the 470 accounts taken down after the company determined they were linked to the IRA. CNN has separately established the links between the Facebook page and the other Don't Shoot Us accounts....

Digital Marketing Channels are Flatlining. Here's What to Do to Stay Afloat. | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

When was the last time you clicked on a banner ad? Was is it on purpose? As many as 60 percent of banner ad clicks are accidental. Only 9 percent of them are viewed for more than one second. Yet every day, experienced marketers waltz into the office with their latest banner ad idea. Or worse, autoplay video.

This is partly why I'm building an AR company that helps make ads more interactive, but also a tell-tale sign that disruption is inevitable.

Marketers are desperate to increase numbers and generate traffic using old-school techniques such as SEO, content, social, email, webinars and influencers.
