Engagement in Social Media | Business 2 Community

Engagement in Social Media | Business 2 Community | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

... Engagement marketing involves more than understanding computer and mobile technologies, apps, software, and computer language, just as traditional advertising is more than simply visual technology, music, video creation, and printing. Engagement marketing is not merely a simple combination of traditional advertising and public relations, with elements of customer service thrown in, as suggested by Richard Branson and the Virgin Group.

Engagement in social media is a distinctly different type of communication supporting true relationships and requiring an approach with deep consumer understanding, support, and value extending beyond the exchange of commercial communication. Engagement in social media looks more like a commercial friendship, using authenticity, transparency, empathy, and celebrating the value of the network, not the firm....

21 Social Media & Content Marketing Tips Tailored For Small Businesses | Heidi Cohen | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Social media and content marketing are must haves for any business. This need is more important among small and mid-size businesses where additional marketing requires a trade-off for other scare resources. ...

Due to this time crunch, small businesses tend to move from one business fire to another without fully thinking through a longer-term marketing plan to support business growth. UMass Dartmouth’s research, "2012 Inc 500 Social Media Settles In", supports this point in terms of social media. The research found that about three out five small and medium size businesses couldn’t track financial results for their social media efforts.

As a small or medium-sized businesses person you know that it can be difficult to find the time to brainstorm marketing initiatives – specifically social media, content and search marketing initiatives that you can track.

Here are seven questions you can ask about your small business marketing efforts. By answering these questions, you can direct your time and resources to where they’ll yield the best results....

How Puppies and Kittens Can Save Your Social Media Strategy | Forbes

How Puppies and Kittens Can Save Your Social Media Strategy | Forbes | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

In the social media workshops and trainings I facilitate, one of the most frequent questions I get is: What kinds of things really get a lot of attention on social media? Or, the dreaded: How can I make my posts “go viral?” These questions are especially difficult for folks working in advocacy fields, where updates and news aren’t always rosy pictures, or captivating soundbites. They see a funny video go by, and they sigh, “But how can we do that?”

First, you’ll have to start chanting one of the mantras that I put forth in my classes: Social media tools are not communications tools. They are relationship management tools.

It’s time for us to talk about the Ladder of Engagement. This diagram (via Beth Kanter) could also be titled, “How Relationships Evolve Online.”...

When Social Media Is Not Your Best Marketing Strategy

When Social Media Is Not Your Best Marketing Strategy | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Despite the hype, social media may not be your best approach when it comes to reaching your customers. Here are some questions to help determine whether to...

Many small businesses think they have to be active in social media just because it's become such a central part of big brand marketing and pop culture. I get it. It's starting to feel like if you're not in social media, you're not doing real marketing anymore. And in many categories, that may be true. Social media has become the great connector, aligning brands and customers in real time in ways never seen in marketing.

But you can't just jump into social media because you feel obligated. You need a plan of attack that makes sense for your brand and your customer. It may not make sense for your customer to engage. The key is to know when using social media fits strategically with what you are trying to accomplish. It starts with knowing what your brand is about and how your customers live their lives -- a marketing fundamental no matter the medium.

If you have a more private brand with customers who don't want to share their stories, you probably have no business using social media channels to connect with them. Here are some key factors to consider when determining what role social media plays in your marketing strategy...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Here's a set of useful tips on how to decide when and if social media should be part of your marketing strategy. As the author says, it's not for every business.

WEDCBiz's curator insight, June 4, 2013 9:37 AM

4 Ideas for Crowdsourcing Content Creation and Promotion | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

You hear a lot of talk these days about crowdsourcing — the idea of using a large online community to complete tasks as diverse as compiling an online encyclopedia (thank you Wikipedia!) or creating a database of popular bars that directs you to watering holes around the world. It’s such a great concept, and yet, based on my conversation with other B2B content marketers, I’ve found that it hasn’t been incorporated into many content creation and promotion strategies.

That’s why I’ve put together this short list of questions that will help you gauge how good a job you are (or aren’t) doing of crowdsourcing your content creation efforts. If you can’t answer yes to all of them, chances are that you’re missing out on a few opportunities for easy wins....

Salmajane's curator insight, May 15, 2013 11:38 AM

Companies seem to always end up ruining the personal touch and authenticity of the internet with their zombified fake posts and webpages. Have you also noticed that more and more people who respond to certain blogs do so for the social media value of it to their business rather than to truly share and connect.  I often think about that when I respond to a post, am I adding value with this post? On the other hand, it's probably helpful to the blogger for there to be many comments in terms of SEO and third party validation. When people see a lot of comments, the blog post tends to appear more interesting and may prompt more people to then read it.

'Little Twerp ... Get a Life': The New Yorker's Jon Lee Anderson Thinks He's Somebody on Twitter

'Little Twerp ... Get a Life': The New Yorker's Jon Lee Anderson Thinks He's Somebody on Twitter | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Jon Lee Anderson, a writer for a weekly magazine called the New Yorker, got angry on Twitter today. A reader with the Twitter name of Mitch Lake (@mlake9) had tweeted at Anderson (@jonleeanderson) to dispute a claim of fact in Anderson's online story about the death of Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

Anderson had written that Chavez had left his country as "one of the world's most oil-rich but socially unequal countries," and Lake countered that in fact Venezuela was the second-least unequal country in the Americas. Lake was rude, using the internet idiom "wtf," which is an abbreviation for "What the fuck?" Whatever high ground may have belonged to Anderson, however, turned into a mudslide within the next 140 characters...

Why The Best Social Media Algorithm Is Yourself

Why The Best Social Media Algorithm Is Yourself | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

With many different news feeds fighting for our attention, it can be difficult to keep up with all the updates and posts that they spew out. When it comes to the Web, information is infinite. Or at least that’s what it feels like when you’re dealing with numerous feeds on a daily basis. If you think about the sites we visit on a daily basis, you’ll realise that without even trying, there’s a lot competing for our attention. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, RSS readers. Already, that’s a lot of feeds fighting for your attention without factoring in mobile apps or the numerous aggregation sites out there. With more information, we need more help to make sense of it all since realistically, we’re probably only interested in half of what’s posted at any time. But are we placing too much trust in these algorithms?...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

A valuable reality check and reminder we are responsible for our own personal "curation."
