The practice of public relations can turn a holy man into a god damn dolt. We shine light into flackery's darkest corners every week in our PR Dummies column. [Oh man, the bad PR is everywhere - JD]
Agency spent $234,000 for three-months’ communications help handling alleged contamination at facility. A nearly quarter-million-dollar public relations contract was badly mismanaged by the General Services Administration, which allowed the vendor to write the statement of work, failed to clearly define specific deliverables and did not seek competitive bids, according to a Senate subcommittee investigation....
Read this story before you give a reporter what you presume to be confidential information. The concepts of “on background” and “off the record” are confusing even to some seasoned reporters. It’s no wonder the PR world gets them wrong so often....
There hasn't been much buzz about the significant downsizings announced this week by many of the major holding companies. Most of the big guys are slicing and dicing their staffs despite year-long announcements about quarterly growth and major wins. The CommPRO.biz article cites a continuing desire by the aircraft carrier-sized behemoths to 'be nimble' as the reason for the bloodletting. But, I don't buy it. Not for one minute. As a recovering holding companyaholic, I can tell you the downsizing is occurring for two reasons... [Multinational PR firms struggle - JD]
...What passes for state of the art in sustainable business rises continually from year to year. The same cannot be said of the state of the art of public relations and the media, mainstream and otherwise, to which they pitch story ideas. So many of the stories sent our way, both by inhouse and outside PR professionals, are of the been-there-done-that variety. So 20th century. They're simply not new -- or news.... [Is PR stuck? JD]

Media Opinions Are #1 Influence... ...“Our study delved into the dynamics of influence on Canadians’ shopping habits, examining media influences, ‘circles of trust’, and the impact of social media on our buying process,” said Carol Levine, chair of the CCPRF. “What we discovered is that hierarchy of influence is a much more complex force than people may expect.”... “The mind map of the socially engaged Canadians in contrast to their counterparts shows us that the future of public relations lies in strategies that are inherently share-worthy by design.”...
By understanding what 11 things reporters consider newsworthy, you can make more news simply by highlighting a different angle. If you’ve ever pitched a story idea to a reporter by phone, you know how hard it can be to succeed. When reporters say “no,” the person pitching them on the other end of the phone often protests, “But this issue is so important!” They’re probably right. But there’s a big difference between what you consider important and what the reporter considers newsworthy....
Late last year, PRSA announced a new initiative to redefine public relations with a more modern definition through their Public Relations Defined campaign. The definition hasn’t been revised since the 1980s, and with the rapidly changing media landscape, it may just be time to think about how our profession has changed. Using crowdsourcing techniques, PRSA has announced three candidate definitions and is asking for feedback in the comments section of this hyperlinked post – final responses due today....
...I started my business career as a public relations professional 30 years ago. Since then I have morphed into new careers like sales, marketing, business development, consulting, and teaching, but there is a little piece of my heart that will always belong to PR. So I’m disheartened that the same tired questions about “what is PR?” that swirled around the profession when I started three decades ago are still taking up space today. In fact, nearly 100 years ago the first definition of public relations was issued and its practitioners have been in a state of chronic paranoia and self-psychoanalysis ever since....
Baseball purists will remember Curt Flood. He was a superb centerfielder for the great St. Louis Cardinals teams of the 1960s. Grossly dissatisfied with the free agent clause in existence at the time (which forbade players from testing the open... But, and this is a BIG but, the awards' programs are unfairly structured to favor the large agencies. Why? Because there is no tiered pricing system....

Why do so many companies hate having fun? I just don't get it. Makes no sense to me. I mean, I'm sure these companies aren't full of boring people. So that said, why do the people who work at these companies who like to talk, laugh and have fun in person all of a sudden become stodgy, boring and drab when it comes to creating content to tell their company stories?...
One of the points I had hoped to emphasize in my last post was that Twitter, blogging, Facebook and Google+ offer an even more controlled communications environment than what a fastidiously prepped/messaged executive might face in a media interview.... This week, we're witness to another example of this "command(er) and control" approach to making one's POV heard in a less fettered manner. Our President participated in a Google+ Hangout....
If you aren't already on the visual sharing site Pinterest, then consider this another reason (among many others) to sign up to the service. It has experienced the fastest growing site in terms of referral traffic than any other social media site. Its volume of traffic is so great that if you combined the referral traffic of LinkedIn, Youtube, Google+ and Reddit, it still wouldn’t beat the growth experienced by Pinterest.... Data journalism is arguably the next big thing in PR. Taking every-day data and turning it into something interesting and inspiring makes a great story and brings it to life. Data journalism uses the abundance of existing data, analyses them and presents the results in a graphical way. The Guardian and New York Times even have dedicated teams focused on data journalism....
Takeaways: It's 12% of the the New York Times overall circulation revenue for the year. That puts the annual circulation number in positive territory -- up 3% for the year, and a lively 8% for the fourth quarter -- reversing the 2010 trend. - 390,000 digital subscribers overall.Growth rate of - 20% fourth quarter over third quarter. Those are the public numbers. We’re left to extrapolate the dollars. My extrapolation is that the run-rate for the Times’ new digital revenue is about $86 million a year.... Ok, so you’ve asked for and gotten a commitment for active support from the top (and if you’re the agency leader, you’ve committed to giving it), and done your research so that you can build the program around the agency’s strategic and professional development goals and client performance on agency feedback. You’ve probably started to lay out an outline of key must-haves. You might even feel that you’re ready to go deep. Stop right there....
I spent a number of years in tech sales before getting into PR. In sales, you learn pretty quickly to aspire to be more than just an order taker. True salespeople know how to to get to "yes", whether that... But the best PR people know how to take a set of facts and a given client situation and turn this into a great story, even if the appeal is not obvious at first. They are not just order takers, but apply creativity and persistence to break through and earn coverage....

Harrington, CEO of Edelman U.S.—and compiled the following five tips...
What’s changed? Here are the four most important things that have changed in the way press releases function in today’s connected world....
I was near the end of my career as a PR guy when I wrote the essay below for the January 1992 issue of Upside. Since then Upside has been erased. Some bits of it still persist on the Internet Archive, but nothing before 1996. But I did save my own draft of the piece, and put it up here, back in the mid-90s, where it has remained all but invisible. So I thought it would be fun to surface it now on the blog, on the 20th anniversary of its original publication....
...Then, when I was a recipient of press releases, and now, as I evaluate and streamline marketing and PR efforts, one thing has always been clear: that the majority of media-relations work hurts more than it helps. I know this statement will upset some readers who work in PR, but you can't read through the problems detailed below and tell me the picture I am painting is not accurate. Also, some PR professionals are terrific, but the majority commit the following three mistakes with regularity....
