Twitter's Best Idea For Keeping Up With News Is Buried Too Deep

Twitter's Best Idea For Keeping Up With News Is Buried Too Deep | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

If Twitter’s value is telling you what’s happening 10 to 15 minutes before everyone else, why isn’t the feature that does that best at the front and center of the app?

Two major news events unfolded this week with the kind of incremental and quickly evolving updates that made Twitter an ideal place to follow both. On Wednesday, a group of congressional Democrats staged a sit-in on the House floor to protest gun violence. And on Thursday, Britain voted to leave the European Union. Throughout both, informed insiders tweeted bits of news and information you simply couldn’t find elsewhere. But unless you were already following those people, or saw a retweet, their updates may as well not have existed; they were trees falling in empty forests. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Twitter is built on a follow model, which is great for some use cases, but also means you’re going to miss a lot of great stuff from people you don’t follow. Unless you followed certain Democratic lawmakers, you likely missed lots of action from the House floor during the sit-in this week. But there’s a solution to that: A Twitter that temporarily inserts relevant tweets from the right people at the right moment into your timeline would be a much more useful Twitter. Amazingly, this Twitter already exists but is buried puzzlingly deep within the platform’s user interface.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is fond of pitching his service as the place you go to see what’s happening 10 to 15 minutes before anywhere else. And it’s true — possessing this information is what’s helped grow Twitter to over 310 million active users. But the company has struggled to grow beyond that, largely because the information Dorsey references is very, very difficult to unearth.

Twitter still beats Snapchat despite trailing in daily users

Twitter still beats Snapchat despite trailing in daily users | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Snapchat's daily user base grew by an estimated 36% since December 2015, at which time reports said it had 110 million DAU. Twitter does not officially break out its DAU numbers, but its monthly active user (MAU) numbers have been stagnating in the last year. In the first quarter of 2016, Twitter's user base grew just 3% YoY.

Despite this, Twitter still has two significant advantages over Snapchat.

First, Twitter's users engage with content, which is critical for publishers. Approximately 59% of Twitter users go to the social media platform for news content, according to new research from Pew. Users also engage with brands' content through Twitter. Coca-Cola, for example, has three million followers.

Snapchat users, on the other hand, primarily use the service for private communication with their friends and family. In fact, 71% of users only access the app in order to send photo and video chats to their peers, according to a Defy Media and variety survey....

Snapchat Passes Twitter in Daily Usage

Snapchat Passes Twitter in Daily Usage | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Snapchat Inc. has 150 million people using the service each day, said people familiar with the matter. That makes the four-year-old messaging app more popular than Twitter Inc. by daily active users.

Snapchat has been growing quickly, boosted by its popularity among young people. The app had 110 million daily users in December, said the people, who asked not to be named because they weren’t authorized to speak about the numbers.

Twitter, which was founded in 2006, has less than 140 million users interacting with the service daily, according to an average of analysts’ estimates surveyed by Bloomberg. The short-messaging service was once the largest social network after Facebook Inc. but has since been surpassed by Facebook’s other apps, including Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

The four-year-old messaging app is said to have 150 million people using it each day. Is it part of your content marketing toolkit?

Morgan Bowen's curator insight, April 17, 2017 4:26 PM
*Snapchat makes communicating more of a game.
*Twitter doesn't make a lot of updates.
*Snapchat is more active based on daily users.
*Snapchat speaks out more to young users.
*Twitter use to be one of the biggest social media users but then Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, etc. passed it.

In my opinion, I'm not really surprised. I mean Snapchat is very common and used by so many people. Also I know a lot of people that have Twitter and don't even use it. I don't even have Twitter. I think Snapchat will stay higher than Twitter because it is more fun and a lot of people stay more active on it.

Twitter's new 'Connect' tab makes it easier to find accounts to follow

Twitter's new 'Connect' tab makes it easier to find accounts to follow | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter wants to make it easier to find new internet friends. A new ‘Connect’ tab on Android and iOS will link you to people and accounts it thinks you’ll enjoy following.

Although Twitter already has a ‘Who to follow’ section with a few suggestions, the idea is that Connect can give people an all-in-one hub for finding new and interesting accounts.

To come up with the suggestions, Twitter mixes in data such as who you currently follow, tweets you like, popular accounts in your local area, current trends, and more. When you open up the Connect tab, Twitter will show you why it’s making those suggestions, and it says suggestions will get better over time.

Though Twitter previously allowed you to view contacts from your address book, these are now available along with other suggestions through Connect. As before, Twitter will alert you when someone in your address book makes an account for the first time, too....

In a sea of 6,000 tweets per second, how do you make yours stand out?

I remember I was at home, and back at that time we didn’t have a lot of people working on social – I was doing a lot of the tweeting myself. I saw emails coming in, and everything indicated that it would be a big big story. As soon as it was confirmed by CNN, I tweeted immediately from the main CNN en Español account.“

Twitter to Stop Counting Photos, Usernames Toward Character Limit

Twitter to Stop Counting Photos, Usernames Toward Character Limit | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Twitter will soon allow users to include more content in their tweets, even without increasing the platform’s 140-character limit. Specifically, Twitter announced four new features coming to the platform over the coming months, including two tweaks to the way a tweet’s character count is measured.

First, @names will no longer count toward the 140-character limit, so users can add more words to their replies without removing usernames from a conversation. In addition, media attachments such as photos, GIFs, videos, polls and quote tweets will no longer count toward a tweet’s character limit. This feature was originally rumored by Bloomberg earlier this year.

Next, Twitter will introduce the ability for users to retweet and quote tweet their own tweets.

Finally, Twitter is removing the need for users to place periods before usernames when they want replies to be viewed by all of their followers. Instead, Twitter said, “New tweets that begin with a username will reach all of your followers … If you want a reply to be seen by all your followers, you will be able to retweet it to signal that you intend for it to be viewed more broadly.”...

Twitter now bills itself as a news app, not a social network - Digiday

Twitter now bills itself as a news app, not a social network - Digiday | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Eagle-eyed Twitter users have noticed that it’s now categorizing itself very differently in the Apple App Store.

In an update yesterday, Twitter now sits in the News category rather than Social Networking. The move shifts it away from its competitors like Facebook, Snapchat and Kik. The switch boosted the app from sixth place in Social Networking to first place within News, according to App Annie.

But why? Twitter didn’t immediately respond for comment, but the change is a quick way to boost its visibility within the App Store’s rankings and bring in new users.
Jeff Domansky's insight:

This is an odd move by Twitter. I don't think it will help attract new users but rather confuse its loyal user base. It isn't just a news app although it's very good at that. In many respects, this move is guaranteed to push away the younger demographic.

With a Social-First Mind-Set, Esurance Completely Dominated the Twitter Super Bowl

With a Social-First Mind-Set, Esurance Completely Dominated the Twitter Super Bowl | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Esurance proved that a less expensive pregame Super Bowl ad can actually create more buzz than an in-game spot, which cost $5 million per 30 seconds. What's more, the brand chiefly leaned on Twitter—not Facebook—to accomplish its feat.

With the exception of #SB50 and #SuperBowl, the brand's #esurancesweepstakes hashtag was seen more than any other combination of words in Twitter conversations on Sunday evening, said Nancy Abraham, vp of integrated marketing communications for the San Francisco company. She said Twitter supplied her with that information Monday.

"And if you count retweets, we're No. 2 only behind #SB50," Abraham added. "There was no other [consumer] brand on that list."

Her company has been tweeted about 2.92 million times since its 30-second spot ran prior to this year's Big Game. The #esurancesweepstakes hashtag, in particular, has been tweeted 2.48 million times, which Abraham and her team said helped generate 1.5 billion media impressions. ...
