IBM's predictions all involve big data and using computing to glean intelligence from vast systems. We discuss them with IBM's research boss....
In a nutshell, IBM says: – The classroom will learn you. – Buying local will beat online. – Doctors will use your DNA to keep you well. – A digital guardian will protect you online. – The city will help you live in it.
Meyerson said that this year’s ideas are based on the fact that everything will learn. Machines will learn about us, reason, and engage in a much more natural and personalized way. The innovations are being enabled by cloud computing, big data analytics, and adaptive learning technologies. IBM believes the technologies will be developed with the appropriate safeguards for privacy and security, but each of these predictions raises privacy and security issues...
This month, Forrester released its list of top technology trends for the three year time horizon.
The author of the report, Forrester analyst Brian Hopkins makes the point that now that consumers and employees have continuous connectivity and an endless supply of apps, the CIO must drive the nimbleness that will be demanded by employees and customers, while he or she must also do so securely. These trends are so woven into the business drivers, that IT leaders must become much more strategic, providing the rationale for the changes that are afoot. With this background in mind, Forrester identifies the following ten technology trends for the 2014 through 2016....
Halloween is behind us, American Thanksgiving is upon us and the mad dash towards the end-of-year Holidays has begun.
A recent study conducted by Adobe showed that social media marketing remains the most important marketing area of concern for the upcoming three years. So while social media now has reached a certain level of maturity beyond the phase of “the shiny new toy with bells and whistles”, where should marketers keep an eye for the upcoming year? Will Facebook still remain king of the social media hill or will there be (another) revolution that most aren’t seeing coming?
Here are five social media marketing trends to look out for in 2014....

The following interview has also been transcribed below...
... From a mobile commerce standpoint, the big news is that retail websites receive the highest share of tablet traffic across all industries. Other sites that receive a significant share of traffic from tablets are automotive and travel. Consumers also are paying bills by tablet, with the largest share of traffic going to telecom provider websites. Other research has indicated that smartphones were used for research but that tablets were more preferred for the actual purchase and the Adobe study is consistent with that. Already hammered by showrooming and various other in-store mobile behaviors like price comparisons, retailers now must accommodate the tablet shopper....
...The report says people are getting some optimism back, although their buying habits -- particularly those of 20- to 30-year-olds -- are going to be radically different. The report lists 13 "microtrends." First on the list is trust, or "trust is the new black." Gerzema said there has been a 50% decline in trust since 2001, but a 35% rise in trust as a driver of brand equity. That suggests there's an opportunity for brands that open their arms wide and say, "Here I am with all my blemishes." "Customers want a reason to believe and brands who give them that will be better off," said Connelly. Gerin said MasterCard is doing just fine in that category -- as she said the brand is 87% more trusted than any other brand of any kind. McCracken said trust matters in a "black swan" world full of disruptive competitors. "The last 20 years have been a chronicle of brands behaving badly," he said. "The name of the game is absolute transparency." The good news for established brands is that assuming they have not been behaving badly, they have equity, while new competitors have nothing but VC money. To achieve trust equity functionally, the "front" of a company -- its brand, communications, what it claims to be -- must match the back, the invisible side, where it does what it actually does.... It’s a stark verdict from a prominent source. “There are hundreds of thousands of people who were trained and mentored, and studied classical marketing, and they got good at it,” says Clark Kokich, chairman of digital agency Razorfish. Unfortunately, the world has changed – and that education is no longer relevant. “If your self-worth and your confidence is based on you being an expert, you’re in deep trouble, because there aren’t any experts,” says Kokich, author of Do or Die: Surviving and Thriving in a World Where the Old Ways of Marketing Aren’t Getting It Done. “Sure, there are experts in some fields. How "cool" is your brand? Marketers may soon get the answers... A Breakthrough In Measuring Cool Business leaders can now determine whether their brands are perceived as cool and how much emotional heat they have as a measure of future business success. Results from a recent study in the beer and spirits categories are described below to illustrate the new insights available from measuring cool. Today there is too much noise, too much clutter and too many choices for customers to navigate in virtually every category. When a brand evokes the characteristics of cool, it stands out and drives consumption. For brand owners and innovators it has been increasingly difficult to differentiate on functional features and benefits to get ahead of competitive brands and private label. The accumulated research on quantifying cool by Buyology has demonstrated: - Cool is a key driver of brand favorability across a wide spectrum of product and service categories - Cool is relevant and important to all age groups, although what is considered to be cool may vary by age. - Cool brands have different characteristic patterns - Cool is more reliably measured through non-conscious methods, where perception and intuition operate in our thinking...
IT'S the social network you've never heard of but it's climbing the rankings in Apple's App Store. In fact, Pheed is the number one most downloaded free app in the App Store under the social networking category, outranking both Facebook and Twitter. And it's been that way for more than a week. So what is Pheed and how does it work? Well, it's a social network that works much the same way as Facebook or Instagram. You sign up, either with an email address or a Facebook or Twitter login, you follow people and people follow you back. You can comment on people's posts and they can comment on yours. It looks and feels like a more sophisticated Instagram....
The blog is dead.I don't say it lightly; I've been blogging since 2000, moving from an email list I started in the '90s to Blogger to TypePad to Wordpress.com to Wordpress.org. ...So I see that moving my blog around like this is just staving off the inevitable; we are moving to collections and curations, to mobile content, and to different authoring tools. Think for a moment about the incredible popularity of Tumblr, or of Pinterest. I believe they are early iterations of the content revolution. I told my journalism students, who are just being taught by their professors that the new way is "digital first," that they have to stretch again--this time all the way to "mobile first."... As we prepare to downshift our minds for the holidays I thought it might be fun to create a snapshot of what brands that succeed in 2013 will look like. As we prepare to downshift our minds for the holidays I thought it might be fun to create a snapshot of what brands that succeed in 2013 will look like. It may help to orientate our minds as they do a lot of important unconscious work over the holiday break. Its so rare these days that we actually allow ourselves sufficient time to integrate the firehouse of information we each receive every day. Treat it as a checklist and ask yourself, on a scale of 1-10, how well your brand embodies each of these ten characteristics.... [A must read for marketers, PR and content pros ~ Jeff]
...I look through that folder usually filled with hundreds of small ideas, and start to filter them. I group similar concepts together and think about how they will matter for the new year. My philosophy when looking at trends is pretty simple – I focus on three things: 1. Idea: What is the CORE idea behind products or campaigns that unites them and says something about our culture or business? 2. Acceleration: How quickly is the idea finding its way into multiple businesses and what are REAL examples? 3. Impact: How profoundly could this idea impact that way that business is done in the short term (next year)? Yesterday for the first time I offered a sneak peek at the first seven of my 15 Trends for 2013 to a room filled with over 200 communicators at the Social Media Outlook 2013 event put on my Potomac Tech Wire and hosted by USA Today... The 2012 Allison+Partners/PR Week C-Factors study, which examined the impact of creativity, collaboration and culture on business and communications, hailed the arrival of a new age of engagement, with 85% of respondents affirming this notion. As a result, 88% of respondents said that creative destruction (tearing down the old to begin anew) will be critical to their organizations in the future, with another 96% stating that they will place an increased emphasis on creativity to drive business forward. All of these findings clearly signify the arrival of a period of groundbreaking change not seen or felt since the Industrial Revolution. What we found most intriguing, however, is that while an overwhelming majority sees the need to creatively destruct as vital to the years ahead, only 6% are currently using the principle within their communications departments. This fundamental disconnect is something that will continue to rise to the surface, particularly as the creation of winning experiences becomes more and more critical to positive business performance (100% percent of respondents echoed this sentiment). Here are four key trends that explain some of these fundamental changes and give us a sense of the direction business, consumerism and communications will be moving in in the year ahead....
