10 Twitter Tips From Social Media Week | Heidi Cohen

Not all tweets are created equal, according to research from Carnegie Mellon University, MIT and Georgia Tech. This is why some of us feel like we’re talking to ourselves on Twitter.

To expand your Twitter audience, think about how you present yourself and the content you share. According to the Twitter research, the most positively received tweets are asking your followers questions, sharing useful information, and letting people know you’ve just created new content. These attributes go to the heart of enriching your followers’ lives....

How Twitter saved the news business (at least a little)

How Twitter saved the news business (at least a little) | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...Instead of killing traditional media, as this TechCrunch post (about Osama Bin Laden) along with a series of MediaMiser reports have shown, social media has rather become an amplifier of traditional media and its journalists (while at the same time allowing everyone else a chance to voice their opinions too).

The reasons for this are simple, in my view: the traditional media – at least most of it – is still viewed as a trusted source and one that’s relatively objective. Bloggers and Twitter users with hundreds of thousands of followers, while wildly popular, just don’t have that same level of trust with the public (some do, but it’s a small minority)....

Twitter Is All in Good Fun, Until It Isn’t

Twitter Is All in Good Fun, Until It Isn’t | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Especially for companies that encourage its use, Twitter creates an ongoing tension between boss and employee as Roland Martin of CNN recently discovered.

I was going to tweet about Roland Martin’s suspension from CNN, but I decided to write a column about it instead. It’s safer this way.

Let me explain.

Big media companies love when their employees hit Twitter. After all, the short-form social media platform gives consumers direct access to media personalities, and along with it, an intimate connection that large media organizations, and the public, revel in....

Be Better at Twitter: The Definitive, Data-Driven Guide

Be Better at Twitter: The Definitive, Data-Driven Guide | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
A new study wants to help you tweet, better.

The Most Annoying Tweet Imaginable, in other words, would be overly long. It would contain stale information. It would #totally #overuse #hashtags. It would be excessively personal. It would be aggressively mundane. It would be whiny.

All this, at least, according to a new study, released today, that explores what we like in our tweets -- and what we find really, really off-putting. "Who Gives a Tweet: Evaluating Microblog Content Value" is the culmination of a year's worth of analysis conducted by the researchers Paul André of Carnegie Mellon, Michael Bernstein of MIT, and Kurt Luther of Georgia Tech as they set to find out what separates value from vagary in a Twitter post....

What it means that Twitter is to public relations what men’s room graffiti is to advertising - StevenSilvers.com | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Like most Americans, I see or hear some 5,000 marketing messages every day. Most of these I don’t notice, much less recognize. There’s no way I could. A person would need more than four hours a day even if he or she spent on average only three seconds considering every ad, logoed item and pitch. (And they said PR bloggers can’t do math.)...

Why Twitter's "Information Network" Strategy Is Under Pressure From Facebook & Google Plus

"We're not a social network, we're an information network." That's what Twitter's vice president of engineering, Michael Abbott, told the crowd at Mobilize 2011 this week.

That isn't new branding, Twitter has been denying it's a social network since at least a year ago. It all dates back to November 2009, when Twitter changed the question it asked users for status updates from "What are you doing?" to "What's happening?".

The trouble is, Twitter's main rivals Facebook and Google+ are not sticking to their knitting like Twitter is. Last week, Facebook widely expanded the range of information it tracks: read, listen, watch, 5 types of "life events" and more. Meanwhile Google+ has become known as a place for people to discuss common interests. This is all bad news for Twitter....

When I started to run my own business years ago, I never would have guessed that, come 2012, I would be expected to update the internet on my life in 140 characters or less.

Yet here I am, keeping as close an eye on my Twitter feed as I do on my iPhone and e-mail. In this digital age CEO’s are expected to tweet.

An excellent little article by e-marketer on research done by social branding firm BRANDFog tells us that 78% of people surveyed on topics related to businesses using social media felt that CEO participation leads to better communication, and 77% of respondents said they were either more likely or much more likely to buy a product from a company that uses social media to help define a company’s image....

Twitter Writes a New Guide for Small Businesses ... and It's Pretty Good : Small Business Search Marketing

Twitter Writes a New Guide for Small Businesses ... and It's Pretty Good : Small Business Search Marketing | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Small business owners that are looking to learn how to have a productive presence on Twitter could do a lot worse than to download and read a new guide that comes direct from the source.

Twitter published the 22-page PDF last week to coincide with the rollout of its small business ad products. It covers Twitter in three chapters, going back to scratch with the most basic info such as “anatomy of a Tweet” — a section that shows and explains hashtags, mentions, replies, retweets and other basics. There’s a tutorial on using Twitter search to find users that tweet about the keywords associated with your business, and a suggestion to search on your product or business name to see what’s been said about you.

But the guide goes beyond that level and actually offers some fairly nuanced tips for the small business crowd....
