Mobile video has begun to accumulate scale, and has also turned out to be one of the few types of mobile content — along with games — that monetizes reliably and drives premium ad rates.
In a recent report, BI Intelligence breaks down the mobile video ecosystem, analyzing the behavior and devices behind the growth in consumption, and examining the demographics and behavior of mobile video consumers.
We look at the new video ecosystem that is taking shape, with mobile devices — rather than television — at the center. Subscriptions for on-demand, streaming, and live TV services are also booming....
Many marketers aren't creating videos because they think video production is hard. Here's a look at that myth and three others regarding video production.
It’s no secret that demand for video is growing. In fact, comScore estimates that over 86% of the Internet audience viewed online video last month, reaching 187 million Americans. And more than half of professional marketers believe video has the best ROI in content marketing, triumphing over whitepapers, photos, infographics, interactive media, and buying guides.
Despite the demand for and results achieved with video, marketers continue to face challenges when working with video. Often stating that video is “difficult to create” and that it is “overpriced,” video production has been viewed as an analog process in a digital world.
The rise of video and the online ecosystem that marketers currently live in has lead to the demand for video-productions services that are reliable, affordable, and easy to navigate.
Today, some pioneering companies have responded to that demand by creating low-cost scalable video services that produce high-quality content specifically for digital agencies and web marketers. Whether promotional online clips, complex video marketing campaigns, or high-definition commercials, those cloud-based solutions have dispelled the most widespread myths related to video production....
Videolicious's automatic video editing solutions allow you to quickly and easily create your own high-quality sales, marketing and communications videos in real-time from your desktop, tablet or mobile device.
I saw first-hand that video can connect audiences to the emotion behind a story or product like no other medium. “With that in mind, we created Videolicious to enable anyone to create sophisticated video productions automatically in seconds.”If you’re skilled at video editing, the video creation platform speeds the process for you. And if you’re new to video creation, it helps you add a layer of polish to your homemade movies. YouTube may be the most popular video outlet on the internet, but it isn’t the only one. There are many more sites that support video and video marketing. While YouTube has some restrictions, many of these other sites don’t have any restrictions. Here is a basic guide to get you started in web based video marketing and to give you the tools to capitalize on this aspect of marketing.
Develop Content Strategically The worst thing you can do with video marketing is to start posting content without a clear, strategic plan. Prior to posting your first video, have several other videos shot and ready to go. Each video should build on the previous one. This will keep things logical and appealing to customers. You should also make sure that your videos are kept under ten minutes. Anything longer and you run the risk of losing a potential client....
When it comes to marketing your brand or business online, can you tell your story in 15 seconds? How about six?
That's all the time you have when you use one of the new short-video sharing apps available for iOS and Android devices. Vine was the first of these video apps, enabling you to shoot and upload videos no more than six seconds long and loop over and over. Not to be left behind, Instagram recently added video sharing to its digital photo app, and upped the time limit to a whopping 15 seconds per video. Instagram videos don't loop.
Then there's MixBit, which lets you shoot short videos but also enables editing of multiple clips into longer one- and two-minute videos. The service just launched last week...
With YouTube Chad Hurley and Steve Chen made publishing videos easy. Now they want to make it just as easy to create them. When Google wanted to boost the quality of YouTube’s content, it gave out $5 million in grants to select creators. YouTube cofounders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, who sold the service to Google in 2006, are now tackling the same problem, but with a different philosophy.
They hope that a new app they are launching on Thursday, called MixBit, will make shooting quality video scalable and accessible to everyone.“Unfortunately I think YouTube is going down the route of rewarding the select few around content creation, be it with partnerships or with ways of funding original content,” Hurley told Fast Company. “I can understand, it’s great to stimulate the community and make money available to them. But I feel that’s a more traditional approach to solving the problem. It’s basically replicating the studio model...I’m looking for something that doesn’t necessarily alienate any group of people, but gives them all equal access.
”That apparently includes people who never shoot any video. With MixBit, as with Instagram video and Vine, users touch their phones’ screens to take multiple video clips that the app combines into one video. But only MixBit allows other people to use those clips, if they’re public, in their own videos....
As I discussed in part 1 of this series we are now in a post-broadcast world. The rules have changed dramatically in terms of how brands connect with their audience. What hasn’t changed is the power of motion picture storytelling. A new form of communication is evolving that combines this power with social media: social video.
My definition of social video is digital video designed to be shared through social networks. Social video is different than broadcast video in many ways; you can’t simply post your traditional 30 second TV spot online and wait for the views to roll in. I am surprised how many brands are still doing this.
There are six principles of social video directly influenced by social media. To be effective brands need to listen first, be agile in terms of production, engage with their audience, be emotive, build momentum and (if you get it right) spawn a viral effect....
Video content reach is at an all-time high, but brands still don't generate more than 1,000 views. Where has all the creativity gone?
...With Americans clicking on and watching more videos than ever, brands must set their campaigns apart from the competition, which Pixability, a YouTube-certified marketing company, found is easier said than done. The agency noted that more than 50 percent of 200,000 business videos across 1,270 YouTube Channels have fewer than 1,000 views. Because the aggregate production value totals more than $4.3 billion, it’s clear companies aren’t seeing the content ROI they hoped for during production....
Content - As Vine and Instagram Video battle for users, one thing is clear: People go crazy for online videos. Here's an infographic explaining why consumers watch product videos and their effect ...
All those product video views translate into more sales for businesses.
Shoppers who view video are 174% more likely to purchase than viewers who did not, according to Invodo. And almost 40% of consumers report that videos increase their likelihood of making a purchase on a mobile device....
As these social video apps mature, marketers are starting to see them as valuable tool. Results ahead?
When the world first heard of Vine, the social video service that lets users post six-second videos to the Internet, not many brands could see the potential in its app. But much to marketers’ surprise, it’s started to make a noticeable impact on their business. With consumers more savvy about evading advertising than ever before, it’s important for companies to find new ways to get their message across. Here’s how a few brands have successfully gained a new audience through these quick video snippets:
On this week’s Magnet Minute episode, our host talks about the importance of using video content for your branding and marketing....
This week on the Magnet Minute, Amy discusses a Gigaom article about a study on the status of video content. According to the study, video will be more prevalent than social media in the coming years, indicating that by 2017, video streaming users will outnumber those active on social networks. That information should be more than enough reason for you to get your business moving on developing new ideas to reach your audience through video content. You’ve likely been urged to do this before, but this is a content medium that’s going to be far too serious (especially in regards to the marketing world) for you to bypass....
How long should your video be? People all over the internet have been asking this for ages! For a long time, the idea was that shorter was better, but recent evidence suggests that long-form videos are now proving more popular, and even YouTube and Vimeo are prioritizing this video content in their search rankings.
However, Tout and Vine are looking to move the trend back to short video. And when I say short, I mean short. Tout offers 15-second video posts, while Vine (from Twitter) offers 6 seconds. The concept of the platforms is to allow only “clips” or video snapshots, rather than long-winded or over-produced content. It’s an interesting direction for video, but it could be the perfect synergy of video and the short attention spans of social networking....
Take a moment to think about what’s just happened in the last 6 months. - Facebook allows images in comments. - Instagram allows videos. - Twitter allows video through Vine. - Podcasting is back in a very big way. - LinkedIn rolls out video ads. - Google+ Hangouts integrate YouTube, Slideshare, and many other media types.
Think about how many different kinds of content these changes encompass. Video. Audio. Images. Text.Think about what it costs to license information from all of the different stock sites you work with on a regular basis. The public relations agency of the future will have a library, a digital repository of content that’s ready to go at a moment’s notice, and the associated creative team to help build and maintain it. Forward-thinking agencies already do....

Twitter’s six-second video publishing platform Vine offers brands a revolutionary way to directly connect with their consumers.
Engaging customers through social media is no eaèsy task, especially with so many platforms competing to capture the short attention span of consumers. While Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr might get most of the attention, there are plenty of other outlets that can help make your brand stand out and generate buzz.
One example is Twitter’s six-second video publishing platform Vine, which debuted on January 24, 2013 and has already become the most used video-sharing application in the market. And, with applications for both the iPhone and Android, experts expect the platform to continue growing.
But what makes Vine so appealing for brands? The videos aren’t just visually appealing and to the point, the stop motion action is just absolutely mesmerizing. Seriously. You can get lost on Vine for hours. This platform offers brands a revolutionary way to directly with their consumers.
Vine is one the verge of becoming a mainstream format, Dunkin’ Donuts for example unveiled the first TV spot completely using Vine on Monday Night Football. Now is the time to jump on board. If you want some inspiration, check out what these 12 brands have been doing....

Most PR pros (79%) agree that video is not being used nearly enough when it comes to content. However, according to a recent survey conducted by PR News and PR Newswire, that is about to change.
Mixed-media strategies will play a key role in PR in 2014 and beyond. To illustrate that fact, here is an infographic that breaks down the survey’s recent findings....
YouTube has added some new tools to its service that aim at helping users grow their channels.
The new features are for accounts in “good standing”, according to the Official YouTube Partners and Creators Blog. The features include live streaming, custom thumbnails, external annotations and series playlists. For example, all channels in good standing with at least 100 subscribers will be able to live stream within the next few weeks. Users simply need to check their Account Features page for an “Enable” button in order to use the feature. In addition, users can now select custom thumbnails for their videos. Thumbnails should be chosen to be representative of the video’s content, but can also be leveraged to make videos stand out....
The benefits of video in the ecommerce arena are well known – no other approach generates engagement and sharing, boosts search traffic and conversions to the levels that video does. But there's more to video than just creating and posting product information. Are you doing everything you can to make the most of these incredibly valuable assets?
Because video does such a great job of attracting and holding consumer attention, it can contribute to a wide range of successful marketing initiatives aimed at everyone from current customers to new prospects.
For example, video can be used in a bounceback strategy – promoting relevant products to consumers who have already visited or made purchases at your site. And its strong search value can be used to hook consumers who are researching potential purchases on the web.
In addition, try these five ideas for making video a powerful contributor to your successful campaigns....
Instagram ads are coming. We don’t know what they’ll look like or when they’ll arrive. But Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has promised that Instagram won’t be ad-free forever. The world’s largest brands are already using the photo-sharing app and its new video tool to pimp their products.
Facebook is betting big on mobile ads, which went from being a blip on the social network’s radar to accounting for 41 percent of the company’s ad revenue in just one year. The network reportedly plans to run 15-second, TV-style ads in users’ News Feeds, which could cost advertisers $2.5 million a pop. If that 15-second limitation—as yet unconfirmed by Facebook—sounds familiar, it’s because 15 seconds is also the cap that Instagram put on its new video tool.
Companies are familiarizing themselves with Instagram video as they prepare for the inevitable launch of video ads and seek to avoid angering Instagram devotees in the process....
Brands looking to diversify their marketing efforts should include video content now that 85 percent of web users view streaming media.
Are your videos roaring or boring? Read these three tips for taking a basic failed video and making it a success.
I'm about to waste a minute of your time. Don't be offended. It happens a lot. In fact, chances are you're already wasting other people's time or you wouldn't have clicked on this column. Every time you post a video that's dull and doesn't communicate a meaningful message, you waste your precious marketing resources as well as the time of the few people who view it....
Vizify hit the ground running as a new social media platform that excels in social sharing. A smart, multi-channel approach is incorporated in their own marketing....
Before this post, I had never heard of #Vizify. A tweet from a good friend mentioning me in her video caught my attention. Since there was a link, I was intrigued. The video is brief–less than a minute–and it’s informative and entertaining at the same time. The fact I have a role doesn’t hurt either. After viewing her video, I am invited to create my own, or I should say, I am invited to let them create one for me. The user interface is clean, simple and entertaining, all at the same time. And the real power, you can edit if you don’t like the finished product they create....
The demand for visual news has changed the way the media reports the news. Digital PR can provide the images, audio and video for their websites.... a recent Q & A with top journalists and bloggers from major publications they all said that their editors demand visuals with every story.
Why? Analytics of viewer behavior shows that when a story has images, video or charts to support and enhance the text, it can increase views by as much as 9.7x.The L.A. Times calls it “No story left behind.” All of them agreed that they use outside video. The only caveat was that the images and videos have to be original, good quality and relevant to the story.
“Visual information reigns supreme, from video to images to infographics. Overwhelmingly, marketers plan to add more video to content marketing initiatives, necessitating increased investment in both technology and production resources. Marketers’ confidence in and reliance on content marketing is beginning to diminish their reliance on print and broadcast advertising, as well as public relations.” - Altimeter Group: Content, the new marketing equation
Think like a publisher. Get your Digital PR team trained to produce excellent visual material that extends the story. And learn to do it fast. Work with the media and help them to tell stories that capture people’s hearts....
GoAnimate offers predesigned content and templates, but also lets small-business owners add their own video, images and audio. There is plenty of data pointing to the enormous value of images and video when conveying a specific message. One statistic from ComScore suggests there are more than 180 million unique video viewers poking around the Internet. Another piece of data claims that a person's purchasing appetite increases up to 85 percent after watching a product-related video....
We talk about the importance of video as part of an integrated marketing strategy all the time. Some brands get it, some don’t. And for many, especially small to medium sized businesses, video just seems either incomprehensible insofar as how to integrate into a campaign or too far out of reach from a budget standpoint.
Both barriers, ease of integration into campaigns and costs, are easily surmountable—and well worth the investment. Here’s why. C
ustomer behavior (and consumer demand) makes use of video when it comes to marketing—and selling–imperative. As Daniel Pink says in To Sell is Human, The Surprising Truth About Moving Others, you can’t motivate people in a knowledge economy with weak or false information. To my way of thinking, video is the veritable definition of real, credible information....
