Based on my first-hand observations, marketers and sales-people don’t treat their personal brand enough like a real brand. Here are four common mistakes they make when using Twitter and how to correct them:
Don’t beat yourself up. Twitter is massively under-utilized — and under-understood (is that a word?).

Do you know what that means?
Twitter lets you “Pin” a Tweet that stays at the top of your stream.
Then when people visit your profile they see that tweet first. It’s pretty useful!...
I realized very quickly that having a barren wasteland of Twitter followers wasn’t going to help me look knowledgeable or trustworthy to any of the websites I wanted to write for. So I set out to find ways to grow both my Twitter account (@nicoleckohler) and WebpageFX’s (@webpagefx).
Nine months later, I’ve added hundreds of new followers to both accounts. These are the three most fruitful, data-backed Twitter strategies I came up with to get more followers, compose better tweets, and ramp up engagement....

Here I have tried to consolidate a list of ideas you can use for your Twitter posts....

If you weren’t among the more than 8,000 people registered for Mark Schaefer’s Twitter Power in One Hour webinar, this post will get you up to speed on what you missed.
Only three years ago, Mark didn’t see the point of Twitter. It was a slew of terms like ‘hamthrax’, ‘aporkalypse’ and ‘porkenstein’ that convinced him.“
I was watching a real-time global brainstorming session for a tongue-in-cheek list of alternative names for swine flu,” Mark recalled. “It made me realize we are on the cusp of something amazing here."
‘Cusp’ is the key word because, says Mark, most marketers have not yet leveraged Twitter for all of its potential. If you’re not following any of these rules yet, you could be among them..,.
A friend said, “I am having trouble getting followers for a new client.” Though she was general in her tweet topics (not just self-promotional), she was at a loss.
Chats, hashtags, selective follow-backs, and meaningful RTs will help you find and engage with worthwhile connections....

Twitter lists are possibly one of the most underrated tools of Twitter, from organising who you follow to finding out what your competitors are posting, it is essential.
Amongst the hundreds of tweets you potentially view per day, it’s easy to scroll past tweets that interest you, or that are important. Twitter lists make missing important tweets a thing of the past. You can create your own, subscribe or be added to peoples lists. Lists allow you organise your followers (or even people you don’t follow) into categories which stream tweets from all of the people in the list in one place.
Twitter lists can either be public or private. Public lists are visible to anyone browsing your profile and people may be notified by Twitter as you add them to a public list. Private lists for example, are a perfect way to gather all of your competitors twitter feeds in one place keeping you aware of their deals, products, ideas etc without the need to follow them directly....

The cool part is I was added to the list automatically.
Marzano told me he created an “IFTTT recipe” that automatically adds users to the list when they mention Marzano on Twitter.
And he told me it’s super easy to do. So I did it and wrote this blog post on how!...

Twitter’s latest ad product provides a call to action right inside a tweet — showing the company is finally creating marketing tools closer to the “bottom of the funnel.” Even as Twitter has grown into a media and marketing giant, not everyone is persuaded that the social media site is useful for selling things. As one marketer recently lamented to me, the platform’s effectiveness is hard to measure — and justify to clients — because “no one’s going to buy a car off Twitter.” [Update: Twitter says "au contraire" and sent this research] The perception, then, is that Twitter is useful for what the ad types call “top of the funnel” marketing — building brand awareness and so on — but that it has yet to deliver paying customers in the way that GoogleAdwords can. Today, though, it appears Twitter has responded with a new ad product that will make it easier for brands to assess what they get for their marketing bucks. The product, called a “Lead Generation Card,” lets marketers post expanded tweets that invite users to sign up for stuff right inside Twitter. The company showed what this might look in a blog post describing the product...
Twitter was never meant to be a social network. In fact Twitter started life as an internal messaging service for a podcasting company just over seven years ago. But how things have changed. On the social web we live on a diet of fast change and rapid media evolution. Twitter’s slow burning maturation often flies below the radar and Facebook changes such as the new timeline and graph search attract numerous blog articles, comments on Facebook and mass media attention. Twitter has become a multi-media social network without anyone really noticing....
