As we approach the year's second quarter, Google is already returning over 46,600 results for “digital trends 2017.” And if you’re in the digital marketing space, there seems to be an unspoken rule that you must always have an opinion on what the key trends will be for the year ahead. But could it be that we’re all stuck in an industry echo chamber? As it turns out, some new research from Code Computerlove might burst that bubble. Code Computerlove surveyed 1,000 U.K. adults to find out what they really think about these trend predictions -- things like voice search, virtual reality, and chat-bots. That data was then compared to what’s actually making the most noise online....
Sources from different social-media arenas give us their takes on what developments we’ll be seeing in the coming year: Mobile Messaging As The New OS If you had told marketers 10 years ago that Facebook and Twitter would become a premium platform to reach consumers, they would have laughed. It might have sounded good in theory, but applying the concept and marketing dollars was more difficult. As 2017 approaches, the conversation is shifting again. Social media isn’t going away, but more people are talking about expanded functionality in mobile messaging. And when you consider the combined user base of the top four chat apps is larger than that of the top four social networks, it’s easy to understand why. Chat apps have intricate ecosystems with unique APIs and developers. Look to mobile messaging to become the new operating system, giving marketers the ability to create personalized experiences via branded content — emojis, GIFs, bots. —Evan Wray, VP and co-founder, Swyft Media....
Transparency” was voted the “word of the year” for 2016 by members of the Association of National Advertisers. The finding, which is the third consecutive year the ANA has polled its members to name a single, defining word representing the industry zeitgeist for a year, follows “content marketing” in 2015 and “programmatic” in 2014. The selection of “transparency” should not be a surprise, given the amount of action and discussion surrounding the subject in 2016, including the ANA’s release of a landmark transparency study conducted by K2 Intelligence, as well as its own set of recommendations and some pushback by its agency counterpart, the American Association of Advertising Agencies. Transparency has also been a central topic during numerous other industry developments, panel discussions and publications, including how it relates to everything from advertising and media-buying fraud to the Presidential election....
Trailing mobile among the most influential consumer trends are three others commonly discussed: the emergence of Millennials (see just how many there arehere); advanced marketing analytics; and demand for personalization. While not perceived to have quite the same impact as Millennials, the aging population also figures among the top 10 consumer trends, per respondents to the survey. Emerging technologies such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence and wearables lie outside of the top 10 consumer trends, outweighed by other shifts including a focus on shopping experience and direct-to-consumer models. To respond to these trends, marketers are taking a variety of actions, ranging from forming strategic partnerships (54%) to increasing technological capacity (51%) and engaging in dialogue with consumers (48%). That consumer dialogue is a critical focus for enterprise social business initiatives, and is also being increasingly used by CMOs to shape innovation....

Well then. Here's one for all you culture buffs who pride yourselves on staying abreast of trends as they come and go each year. New York-based sparks & honey is out with its annual A-Z Culture Glossary of 2017: The Trends You Know to be Relevant, a compendium of cultural trends the agency predicts will...wait for it...change the world in 2017! To get one thing out right up front: Trump is nowhere to be found on the list. This is the agency's third outing of the list which, to date, has received over 2.4 million views on Slide Share. Which makes perfect sense because some of the trends and terms used to describe those trends are just whack. To come up with the list, the agency uses a framework called the Elements of Culture to organize its cultural trends. The 100 trends in the report are broken into the following five categories: Aesthetics, Media, Tech/Science, Humanity and Ideology. Among the trends to watch for 2017 are....
So here we are – 2016, with yet another year under our belts. 2015 held some interesting developments in the digital space. We saw the launch of Instagram ads, the rise of programmatic media, Facebook and Twitter video ads and reach and frequency buying models. So the natural question to ask is, “what are we going to see in 2016”?
To be honest I think that 2016 is probably going to be more of the same but on a much larger scale. The trends that started in 2015 are going to become further entrenched this year. But specifically, what do we foresee?...

It’s a fact that predictions have always attracted people’s attention, otherwise all these fortune-tellers and mediums would have been unemployed instead of wearing golden rings and necklaces. Based on this, we decided to peer into our crystal balls (actually with the shape of a screen) and collect all the technology trends that we have this feeling that will be on the spotlight during 2015....
It’s going to be one of the most interesting years ahead. There are disruptive marketing trends ahead and this list starts to build on the platform of sharing, something I’m very interested in and will be focusing even more on in 2015. I will focus on sharing platforms (not just social networks). More specifically, I’ll be focusing on how, why, when and where we share and how it will change the way customers do business with people and brands. Here we go...
I have bad news for companies that are struggling to improve their customer engagement—it’s only going to get more difficult.
...They also shared ideas and best practices where there’s common ground. “People want to learn, borrow, and understand what other industries are doing to solve similar problems,” said Bob Weiler, Executive Vice President of Oracle’s Global Business Units.
The customer experience is one such area—a challenge, opportunity, business goal, and IT undertaking all rolled into one here-and-now, make-or-break imperative.
“The customer is in the driver’s seat. We need to get in front of what her needs are,” said Karen Katz, CEO and President of Neiman Marcus Group , during the Oracle Industry Connect keynote for retailers....
The social media trends we will likely be obsessing over this year from a better way to blog to taking even more selfies.
More than 70% of online adults are Facebook users, but the popular social network is facing some slivers of competition as new digital destinations entice users. In 2013 we saw the rise of visual social media, with services such as Instagram and Pinterest reeling in fans with photos-first agendas.
This year there is not just one emerging trend, but instead there are a number, changing the way people connect online--all while slowly eating tiny bits of Facebook's lunch....
I am starting to think marketers and astrologers have more in common than meets the eye. We are both asked to stargaze and look into the future on a regular basis. Luckily, I don’t need the stars to predict what comes next because technology always leaves telltale signs. Here are the Top 5 Digital Trends you can look forward to for 2014...

A digital transformation can provide employees the tools they need to create the best work environment for the future. Digital transformation builds on the current state of global connectivity and can include a wide variety of features. "We understand that the environment is changing inextricably, but what do we do now to prepare for this new reality?”
I had become so accustomed to describing the changes in content consumption and its implications for marketers, media companies, and tech-enabled content platforms that I was taken aback.
The nods among her team made it abundantly clear that “what now?” was more than a theoretical question, and one that needed to be addressed ASAP.
Thus, herewith are five practical predictions on the future of digital advertising creativity and real-world recommendations on what to do now to prepare....
This is the time of year people post their prognostications for the next year. The predictions will be … predictable: More video! More Snapchat! More podcasts!
Well, OK. It’s pretty easy to make a prediction based on what’s already happening. But there are less obvious tectonic forces rumbling through our marketplace. Here’s a view of some of the underlying shifts, the marketing mega trends, you need be considering in 2017....
We’re at a critical time for the digital economy. Digital is no longer the shiny front end of the organization – it’s integrated into every aspect of today’s companies. As digital technologies continue to transform the economy, many leaders are struggling to set a digital strategy, shift organizational structures, and remove the barriers that are keeping them from maximizing the potential impact of new digital technologies. Every year, Russell Reynolds Associates surveys more than 2,000 C-level executives on the impact, structure, barriers, and enablers of digital technologies across 15 industries. The barometer below shows the percentage of executives surveyed who responded that their business would be moderately or massively disrupted by digital in the next 12 months, broken down by industry....

Media business sectors went through the digital wringer in 2014: the reinventions of music, newspapers, and book publishing are not finished, though such change is certainly underway. And this past year we saw the first serious signs of disruption in the biggest sector of all as television began its heave and quake from cord-cutting, alternative platforms, advertising shifts, and audience fragmentation.
Some of the key trends we’ll be watching develop in 2015 include...
Last year, I shared Brand Keys' Robert Passikoff's 14 Brand Trends for 2014. This year, Robert again put together his proposed trends for the upcoming year. He again shared his thoughts on the numerology, as well, this time, obviously focusing on 15: In numerology 15 is the combination of the number 1 (representing leadership and forward movement) and the number 5 (numeric for business and finance), thus 15 becomes the fusion of leadership and forward momentum for brands and marketers. Let's see what Robert predicts for the new year.
While most of what will happen in the future may be a surprise, I believe that there are a lot of things that will happen in the media and marketing industry in the near future that aren’t that hard to predict -- certain things so likely to occur, they are almost inevitable. In fact, you could view them as near certainties.
Why try to predict the future when you’re almost certain to be wrong on many points? If you are trying to prepare for -- or exploit -- how key trends will evolve, you need to have a point of view on the future, so I never mind sticking my neck out on predictions. In that vein, I will offer up four near certainties to occur over the next five years in our industry. Here they are....

A primer on the photosharing service that Facebook reportedly offered to buy for $3 billion.
.... How does Snapchat actually work?
Once you've found your friends on Snapchat, you can simply start taking pictures and sending them out to as many friends as you want. The app has a couple of distinguishing features in terms of photo taking. One, users can draw on their photos. So that's funny sometimes. Two, you can caption any photo. Three, you get to set how long — from 1-10 seconds — the photograph will be visible to receivers. Crucially, too, the app tells you when your snaps are opened by the receiver. You know they saw it....
