We all love lists, especially “best of lists” related to our own profession. It is even better, of course, when people we know actually make the list—and when we make the list ourselves. A number of “best PR blogs” lists recently surfaced. InkyBee, Cision and CyberAlert all weighed in, tackling the ranking in different ways using a variety of criteria....
...You’re off to a great start. However, you’ve only started to scratch the surface of the content possibilities because your audience reach is still limited — while your corner of the world is engaged, you aren’t quite at the center of the wider industry conversation yet. If we agree that the goal of content marketing should be to enable your content creators to function as brand journalists (we do, right?), then it’s fair to equate your content effort to that of a weekly community paper. However, there’s an even bigger opportunity here, because online content can help you extend your reach far beyond your current community and create an exponential opportunity for your business....
...One has to look no further than the pages of a USA Today to see just how the charticle has taken its rightful place as a journalistic vehicle for today’s time and attention-starved news consumers. A few minutes with quick visual coupled with scannable text and we know just about everything going on in the world. In fact, some writing sites even advise would-be writers to skip the feature article and submit a quick-impact charticle for consideration.
What is a Charticle?
Charticles – as defined by Omaha World-Herald Deputy Presentation Editor Josh Crutchmer – are combinations of text, images and graphics that take the place of a full article. They are often used by bloggers and journalists alike to express one big idea with a bit of narrative provided by the supporting text that follows or sets up the big visual or chart that’s usually the feature in the post. In many cases, the chart featured in the charticle could likely stand on its own, as in, the data is typically that compelling. Moreover, that’s also what makes it worth writing about. The charticle is singular in focus and offers a great opportunity for expressing a succinct thought leadership point of view on a relevant bit of data....
Search engine optimization (aka SEO) and blogs are intricately intertwined. By their nature, blogs are attractive to search engines. Additionally, the content is linked both internally and externally helping to show its relevance and importance in the context of other content. Don’t take my word for it, here’s what fifteen SEO experts, many of them published authors in the field, recommend for maximizing your search optimization for your blog....

A neighbor lady invites me to her place for dinner. By her red pajama suit I surmise she’s a follower of Rammed Ass, Swami Scratchyerbanana or other esoteric cultist. She’s ordered Chinese takeout. While my host repairs to the kitchen for drinks, I thread the fortune from her cookie and write on the back, “Tonight you are doing the dishes” then slip it back, unobserved. Later she does exactly as instructed. It’s then I realize there really is a Higher Power. In tech PR and marketing, pundits dispense advice with similar near-divine authority. One such is Seth Godin. I read Seth’s blog with a mix of anticipation and caution. God has a wicked sense of humor and loves to put a tack in your chair. You never know when She might speak in tongues through a marketing guy.... [James Crawford has a humorous Zen moment - JD]

Did you know writing affects your brain in a way similar to meditation? When you write, your breathing slows and you enter a "zone," which allows your words to flow more freely, an infographic from BestInfographics.co says.
The infographic illustrates how writing affects the brain, and shares other interesting facts, like why stories are so memorable and clichés are not. Here are a few takeaways:...
Save time. Blog better. The blogosphere is stuffed with tips for bloggers, but if you don’t have time to sift through 100,0000 articles,
Here are 50 quick-hitting blogging tips.
When the PBS website came under attack by hackers this weekend, the Newshour staff took to publishing its news transcripts and videos to Tumblr instead. A month earlier, a TV station in Tallahassee, Fla., posted videos and news on Facebook when technical difficulties disrupted its 11 p.m. newscast.
PBS Newshour is posting its stories on a Tumblr site. With so many publishing platforms and social networks available, there’s no reason for a news organization to go dark when its website is down. But it must have a good plan in advance. Here are the steps to take now to get ready....
Today, after lots of messing around with data, we’re pleased to be publishing an Inkybee view of 60 of the best PR blogs in the world.
Why? Well, everyone loves a list. And, there are certainly a few of similar lists about at the moment. But, as far as we’re concerned, the primary reason for doing this it to experiment a bit with the powerful technology behind Inkybee.
Last month Cision published a list of their Top 50 PR blogs and earlier this year PRWeek published their “Powerbook” of the most influential practitioners in the UK PR industry.
We’re not competing with these publications and we’re definitely not proclaiming that this list is the definitive list of the best 60 public relations blogs on the planet. Quite the opposite. We recognise that this is a subjective process and ranking could be done in many different ways. We have been through a rigorous, objective methodology which we’ve detailed separately, but it can never be definitive. Plus, we have focussed sharply on “Public Relations” to the exclusion of blogs with wider coverage of marketing and social media....
I get several hundred pitches a week from well-meaning PR people.
My conversations with other bloggers suggest this is the norm, meaning it is as tough to reach a blogger as it is to reach a mainstream journalist. It may be even more difficult since most of us bloggers work part-time on our blogs, and devote less time to wading through pitches as journalists. Sadly, nearly all of the pitches I get are just plain spam. The good news is that I pay attention to things people send me, and occasionally write about them. How do you increase your chances of getting a blogger like me to talk about you or your clients? Here are some ideas...
If you want to pitch better, pitch smarter. That’s the message that Porter Novelli’s Jodi Fleisig delivered in January’s Marketing News. While you probably won’t pitch journalists as a PR intern - no matter where you work - these 5 tips for pitching better and smarter are nuggets you can take with you through your career....
We received over 750 nominations for our fourth-annual Top 10 Social Media Blogs contest (the blogosphere’s biggest contest for social media blogs). The list of 24 finalists is pretty impressive! Take a look for yourself below....
'Fiscal cliff' and 'whatever' top the lists. Don't roll your eyes. I'm just sayin' that these words are, like, so yesterday. Or maybe not. YOLO. Political observers may have been ambivalent about Tuesday night's House of Representatives vote to halt mandatory tax increases for all but the United States' highest earners, extend unemployment benefits, and fend off other potentially damaging, self-imposed economic consequences. Language lovers, however, had to be delighted, because it meant they were one step closer to never again hearing the phrase "fiscal cliff." That term topped Lake Superior State University's annual list of banished words....
Let's settle this issue right now. To make a real difference in your niche and grow your business, you must, without fail, produce at least 1500 words per day. Yes. One thousand five hundred words. Per day. Every day. You can take weekends off (if you're a slacker).
Does that sound high? For most website owners and small business marketers, that probably seems like more than one could reasonably handle, given limited time and resources. However, for a medium or large business that employs actual writers, 1500 words is no big deal. Guest bloggers ensure this very blog on Search Engine People far exceeds that number.
Now, before you fall into a deep despair about the futility of it all, I made up that number to prove a point. There is no such number. 1500 words to achieve what exactly? It just isn't possible to find a single rule of thumb that could apply across business types and industries. And it's entirely possible that a less prolific writer can produce better marketing results than one who writes for volume. So, here's how to find your very own number, and make it count....

When it comes to successful content marketing, we all know by now that content that pushes people's buttons and makes them... “feel” (as cheesy as that may sound) is the kind of content that gets shared.
