How to Produce a Podcast | Jay Baer

How to Produce a Podcast | Jay Baer | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Here at Convince & Convert Media, we produce three podcasts. Most frequent is my nearly-daily video showJay Today (read this post to see how we make 8 pieces of content out of each episode).

We also produce Social Pros, the podcast for real people doing real work in social media. This show is in its fourth year, and new episodes are launched weekly.

Our newest addition is Content Pros, where the tips and tricks of the world’s best content marketers are revealed. That show releases two new episodes per month.

All of these shows (and 550 more) are rated and reviewed at our MarketingPodcasts.com site, the first search engine for marketing podcasts.

We’ve been producing podcasts for quite a while, so I wanted to provide this checklist of some of the steps we take that might help make your podcast better and easier to get on the air....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Jay Baer shares the 12-step process he uses to produce his podcast shows. You may never need to go this far in your podcasting but it is an incredibly detailed blueprint if you decide to go full speed.

Podcasting: why it should be the PR consultant’s best friend | Firefly

Podcasting: why it should be the PR consultant’s best friend | Firefly | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...From a PR’s perspective, there are three reasons to take in interest in podcasts:

1. Listen: learn about your industry.

2. Reach out: get your clients or your company featured on leading podcasts.

3. Speak out: make your own podcast and reach your target audience in a different way, at a different time.

The reasons also map quite nicely onto a three-step process for PRs to get into podcasting. I’ve spoken to half a dozen podcasters to get an insight into why they do it and ways PR people can engage with them, with some surprising insights....

Here's a fresh look at the value of podcasting for marketing and PR pros.

Hot Pod: How big are Audible’s ambitions in changing short-form audio? Really, really big

Hot Pod: How big are Audible’s ambitions in changing short-form audio? Really, really big | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

"I'm not at Audible to build podcasts. I'm at Audible to start a revolution. In the way audio is produced, and in the way audio is distributed."

“In the audio space, it is hard but doable to produce things of high quality. It is hard but doable to produce a lot of things. It is very difficult to produce a lot of high quality things,” Eric Nuzum, Audible’s senior vice president of original content, told me, continuing a line he’s always held since joining the Amazon-owned group last year to oversee original content (audiobooks has been its bread and butter): that Audible’s ambitions for audio stories are huge.

In April, Audible rolled out a new section in its mobile app called Channels, featuring curated collections like “The Daily Rush” or “The Weekender,” shows from many publishers like Marketplace or PBS Newshour, and voice-narrated versions of news stories from places like The Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, or The Washington Post (no preferential billing for the Jeff Bezos-owned Post).

It teased listeners with an original show: Presidents Are People, Too, hosted by a former Daily Show head writer and a historian. It introduced timely collections — “British Exit: The Global Impact” — with an editor-curated collection of analysis and opinion pieces from a variety of sources. Channels content came with a full Audible subscription, but there was no opportunity yet to subscribe to just Channels....

6 Reasons Why Marketers Should Bet on Podcasting

6 Reasons Why Marketers Should Bet on Podcasting | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

It started with a few tweets here and there asking me to start a podcast (“I don’t have time to read all your blog posts!”), a couple of guest appearances on hangouts and other marketing podcasts, and next thing I know, for Inbound Marketing Week this year, I launched The Superheroes of Marketing podcast.

There is more to it than that, obviously. And the challenges were well, challenging… I’m not good with hardware. Wires and plugs all look the same to me. As an introvert, the performance part of the project is exhausting. Like everyone else, I’m busy. Really busy. Podcasting is extremely time consuming (more so than I expected).

But, here I am, planning, scheduling, recording and editing a weekly podcast with my co-host, Kelly Kranz. Am I crazy? Maybe. But here's why it works....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

There are so many blogs and so little time to read them. Podcasting is a great way to share marketing information with people on the go. Why should you start a podcast?

The Rise of Podcasts as Business Education [Infographic]

The Rise of Podcasts as Business Education [Infographic] | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
As our world has grown more mobile and related technology has evolved, podcasting has become a mainstream form of continuing education—including for marketers.

"Podcasts are a new form of continuing education, making it possible to 'audit a class' in any subject just by listening on the go," states the following Marketing Podcasts infographic.

And unlike in the early days of podcasting, today's podcasts are easier to download and listen to on smartphones and mobile devices.

For example, iTunes now has 250,000 podcasts, up from 200,000 in 2010, and Apple has more than one billion subscriptions to podcasts via its iTunes app.

Want to learn more about the benefits of podcasts and the technologies that have improved podcasting? Then check out the infographic:

Podcasting as a Business Content Marketing Strategy - Search Engine Journal

Podcasting as a Business Content Marketing Strategy - Search Engine Journal | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Every day we hear more experts preaching the gospel of podcasting as a content marketing tool. It's a very enticing sermon. According to Google Analytics the average visitor to my website stays for two minutes and seven seconds. According to Stitcher {popular alternative to iTunes} the average podcast listener stays for twenty two minutes.

If you believe the concept that the time our audience spends in front of our content builds authority then by these statistics I would have to produce 11 blog posts to equal just one podcast. Podcasts place the ideas and expertise that establish us as an authority in front of our audience for a longer period of time per interaction. From a business content marketing strategy, this is why we podcast.

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Remember, Podcasting is NOT for every business, but it can be a powerful tool in the right situation.

My Complete, Step-By-Step Podcasting Tutorial to help you Learn How to Start a Podcast like a Pro. 6 High-Quality Videos and Everything Else You Need!

Starting a podcast has been one of the best decisions I have ever made for my brand. Ever.

Since starting The Smart Passive Income Podcast in July of 2010:

*  The show has surpassed 2,000,000 total downloads. (Sept. 24, 2012 – see graph)
*  The podcast has become the #1 way people who read my blog found out about me – that’s above search, social media and links from other websites. (See survey results)
*  I was contacted by a Hollywood producer who listened to my show to consult as the social media director for a $10M independent film (See IMDB)
*  Fox News reached out to me to feature my story on the evening news.
*  I led a panel at Blog World Expo in New York this past June about the power of podcasting. It was cool to see the room filled beyond capacity. (See image)
*  Several other big-name bloggers have started their own podcasts, including Michael Hyatt, Michael Stelzner and Derek Halpern - and even more recently Seth Godin.
*  I’ve become more confident as a person and better skilled as a speaker. It was the perfect stepping stone to conquering my fear of public speaking. Next year, I’ve already been booked to speak at 4 different events around the United States, and have been asked to speak at even more events around the world....

[Pat Flynn is an Internet marketer but don't let that throw you off from this excellent how-to podcast tutorial and resources. he's got a very approachable style and practical advice to blogging and podcasting.
