“Chatbots will replace the search window,” said Will Wiseman, chief strategy officer, PHD U.S. “There will be a rapid decline in app usage. The last three years, we have gone from brands’ desire to have mobile-friendly websites, then apps, and [we] now expect to see app activity get cannibalized by bots.”

The mobile web and apps are complementary. However they’ve been treated as though they’re mutually exclusive in the press and in most industry discussions. Now comes a Millward Brown study, “The New Mobile Mantra,” that offers some deeper insight into when people use apps and when they use the mobile web.


While this isn’t the first piece of research to compare mobile web and app usage. But it’s more nuanced than most and seeks to get at the consumer psychology and rationale behind the varying use cases. The study, conducted over the course of the first three quarters of 2015, is based on both an examination of click-stream data and consumer survey data (n=2,011 US smartphone owners over 18).


Millward Brown found that while apps command the most user time, “61 percent of smartphone users access their browsers at least once a day, spending an average of 31 minutes in total.”...

How we experience content via connected devices – laptops, phones, tablets, wearables – is undergoing a dramatic change. Kdan Creative Cloud allows users to access their content on different devices and in the near future founder CEO Kenny Su says the startup, which is currently raising closing its Series A, plans to parse data from all of its apps to help people organize their content more quickly based on file formats.


“Currently our marketing position is to try to complete the whole mobile content creation experience between Adobe and Evernote. Evernote’s business strategy is to help people keep everything in the cloud, but if people create something more, they don’t have the tools. Adobe has always been targeted to professional users, not mobile users who are amateurs,” say Su.


Two of Kdan’s apps, NoteLedge and Animation Desk, have gained traction through a partnerships with Samsung and Microsoft. The apps are currently pre-installed on several of Samsung’s mobile devices, including the Galaxy 3 and Galaxy tablet, in 13 Asian countries, as well as Microsoft’s Lumia series in Taiwan...

If you believe in the messaging revolution and that messaging is the killer app for mobile, then Kik has to be on your radar. If you believe in good design and a young userbase, then Kik should be near the top of your list of chat apps to pay attention to.


Having said that messaging is the killer app on mobile, it may sound like contradiction to say that messaging is also a commodity, but that, too, is true. On my iPhone’s homescreen, I have a folder that contains six messaging apps, and the messages come to me by push notification. I don’t really care which app I use to respond, but I do care about the stuff around those messaging experiences – the tools, the timelines, the connected apps. If you agree, then, that a communications platform is more important that a pure-play mobile chat app, then Kik deserves the same attention you give to WeChat and Line, and more than you give to WhatsApp....

Data from the Pew Research Center shows teens now primarily use their smartphones to access the Internet -- and this could have a big impact on your business.

 

Teens use smartphones (shocking, right?). What you might find more interesting is that new data from Pew Research Center shows that 78% of U.S. teens now have a mobile phone—and nearly half of them (47%) own a smartphone. As a result, smartphones are now the primary devices that teens use to access the Internet—and this has big implications for your marketing strategy.

 

The Pew study reports that 50% of teen smartphone owners say they use the Internet through their phones. And 3 in 4 teenagers report they’re “mobile Internet users,” which means they access the Internet on some sort of mobile device including phones and tablets (compared to 55% of adults who classify themselves in the same category)....

I quite like this article, mentioned about the pitfall in different area including application design and customers engagement,

I never know that 90% of the customer will be gone within 6 months.

I guess it is really depends on the nature of the application.

Consider Games related application, 6 months are more than enough.. Game such as Fifa or plants vs zombie will release a new version every year.

Additionally, this article mentioned about designing apps with ongoing purpose to allow customer retention. It is really a nice thing to consider.

The list of breakthrough interfaces for reading news on smartphones is a short one. Instapaper is arguably the pioneer in this area, with its focus on a simple reading experience. Vox Media’s SB Nation iPhone app cleverly grouped news updates about the same topic (Vox tweaked that design in its current web app approach.)


But many mobile news apps and sites are little more than re-skinned RSS readers, and surprisingly few publishers even bother to format their email newsletters for easy reading on iPhones and BlackBerries. When we were creating Quartz earlier this year, we needed to look for inspiration to non-news applications, such as the Clear to-do list app — it’s hard to find boldness and creativity in the news industry’s smartphone products.

While I was at Le Web London last week, I grabbed a few minutes from my frantic liveblogging to chat with Valentin Squirelo of iPad app publishing platform Tactilize. The startup is in closed beta right now, but he ran me through their quick, easy workflow for publishing iPad apps from a web interface.

It's a great idea. There are too few good solutions for publishing content-based iPad apps which don't rely on legacy page-layout apps like Adobe InDesign. The system he showed off was fast, elegant and intuitive. You use the Tactilize web tool to build your native app. It's structured as a series of "pages", locked into sections, and drag and drop interactive elements from a palette of options including Dropbox, Gmail and so on.

Valentin described it as being "between InDesign and Tumblr" in ease of use, and I think he has a point. It's probably more on the Tumblr end....

Thanks to app development software tools, many businesses are building apps. And the trend is expected to continue.
According to data collected by Biznessapps, a mobile platform for small businesses, nearly half of small businesses are expected to adopt a mobile app by 2017 or later....

IBM’s Watson platform has another new side project: making holiday gift predictions. The company is releasing a new iPhone app called IBM Watson Trend, which they claim can predict which gifts are most likely to sell out at stores and e-commerce sites. While aimed at helping consumers, the app also shows the investment IBM has been putting into expanding Watson into the business world.


The app shows "trending" gifts in three categories—toys, consumer electronics, and health and fitness—alongside explanatory information about why those particular objects are trending. This includes analysis of hot purchases such as Lego City and the Nikon D-SLR, as well as products like Mattel's "Hello Barbie", which are declining in popularity (IBM says that, although popular with parents, children feel the interactive doll has an outdated style)....

No one can deny the rapid rate in which Mobile Commerce is growing.


A recent report from comScore showed that online retail spending had grown by 14% last year, while total consumer retail spending had only grown by single digits. At the moment, most online spending is still happening over desktop and laptop computers, but that is expected to change, and soon, according to recent data from the U.S. Census and other sources.


Mobile Online Spending is the Way of the Future.People might still be using their computers to buy online, but they won’t be for much longer. According to Digiday, commerce is one of the industries that will be most affected by growing mobile platforms. According to a forecast by Goldman Sachs, global e-commerce is expected to grow to $638 billion by 2018. Goldman also asserts that it will be tablets rather than smart phones that will be the primary source of online spending....

Believe me I am one of those people who uses Google Currents, AP Mobile, Pulse and various other news aggregate apps to get the latest headlines online.  Despite this I found that I missed having a local paper, I missed the detailed articles and specifically the more local news around the cities I cared about most.  Online news on Google News can lack a local appeal and I still liked print papers for some occasions.

 

PressReader is the best of both worlds in my opinion, this app which supports way more than just iPad, iPhone but also has Windows App, Android Phone App, Blackberry App and Honeycomb app specifically basically scans over 2,300+ physical newspapers to make them digital and available to read on your mobile phone or tablet.

 

You can also find papers for so many countries it is almost mind boggling, you simply search for the paper you want to download and read.  First by filtering which country papers you want to browse....
