Extreme market research | Marketoonist Tom Fishburne

Extreme market research | Marketoonist Tom Fishburne | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

I first drew a version of this cartoon years ago sitting behind the focus group one-way mirror while working at General Mills. We held a lot of focus groups, many of them in a Minneapolis suburb called Eden Prairie. We used to jokingly refer to those focus group respondents as “The Oracles of Eden Prairie.”

We seemingly brought just about every marketing idea to the Oracles of Eden Prairie for inspiration and direction. But what frequently happened is that we would listen for statements that confirmed what we already believed and then disregard the rest. I learned that focus groups can be a great tool for confirmation bias.

The Wall Street Journal recently wrote about how focus groups are gradually being displaced by technology-driven tools like social listening. As Seventh Generation’s Maureen Wolpert put it: “It’s very expensive to find that progressive-leaning, millennial new mom who has the time to attend a focus group. This is a way to listen in on the conversation moms are having and to really see their problems.”...

In its most basic definition, psychology is the science of behavior and the mind.  As online marketing develops and grows out of consumer demand, so does psychology and an understanding of how consumers think and behave as they use the Internet for purchasing decisions.

How does psychology work in the process of lead conversion? First, let’s gain a better understanding of lead conversion in online marketing, specifically inbound marketing.  As you may know, call-to-actions (CTAs) and landing pages are an integral part of lead conversion and inbound marketing.

With all the buzz about Content Marketing, Lead Generation and Lead Conversion, it's important to hit the pause button for s second, and think about  what drives someone to click a CTA or what emotional triggers are necessary to engage potential clients or customers. How Verizon Uses Social for Marketing Research | Jay Baer | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Mason Nelder, Director of Consumer Insights at Verizon, joins the Social Pros Podcast this week to discuss the incredible advantages, the challenges, and the long-term company-wide transformations made possible through the customer insights gained....

So, how do you prove that this system is actually working? Verizon has actually moved away from proving the results of social media. Instead, it’s more about proving out how they’re dealing with issues they’re seeing come up. (highlight to tweet) It used to be about “If we do this, we save this much money,” or “If we do this, we make the experience this much better.”

Now Mason and his team are trying to wrap their heads around how to measure that experience in total.Looking at the long-term effects of the changes Verizon makes based on consumer insights, Mason and his team are looking at what people think about the brand and how easy it is to do business with Verizon. “The long-term effect is: Do people stick with you? Do people think you’re easy to do business with? Do people love you because of how you connect them to their network?”...

Why You Are Ignoring The Most Important Data | Social Media Explorer

Why You Are Ignoring The Most Important Data | Social Media Explorer | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The current fad of big data has caused marketers to ignore the requirement that humans need to analyze conversations...

...Big data is the allure of more. More information. More access to behavior. Opportunities for more sophisticated analysis. The thinking goes likes this: If we know every move people make then we not only know everything, but we can predict everything. As business people we love it because the information is finite, scalable and measurable.

It’s ironic that big data has such an allure in an age when some of the most important information happening online is coming out of conversations. And the way to analyze online conversations is to read them, participate in them and try to understand them without a formula.

Conversations are not data. Anyone who has ever tried to analyze them through sentiment analysis knows this. If you ever watched Star Trek, you can imagine clearly that even an advanced, science fiction character like Data, misunderstood human conversation....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Great quote: "Conversations are not data."

If you're not listening, you're losing track of invaluable insight.
