Stanford's Most Popular Class Isn't Computer Science - It's Something Much More Important

Stanford's Most Popular Class Isn't Computer Science - It's Something Much More Important | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Before Kanyi Maqubela became an investment partner at the Collaborative Fund, an early-stage venture capital firm focused on social enterprises, he was a typical Stanford student in need of career guidance. He was working with startups, studying philosophy, dating someone special—and feeling overwhelmed.

Enter "Designing Your Life," a new and wildly popular course for Stanford juniors and seniors that is grounded in design thinking concepts and techniques. The course’s lessons gave him the perspective he needed to navigate decisions about life and work post graduation....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

It's called "Designing Your Life," a course that's part throwback, part foreshadowing of higher education's future. Pure inspiration. Recommended reading. 10/10

Why many of my students will not have a job upon graduation - Schaefer Marketing Solutions | {grow}

Why many of my students will not have a job upon graduation - Schaefer Marketing Solutions | {grow} | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

If you have made any kind of a career change in the past decade, more than likely you did not find your new position through a job fair or want ad. Yet, this is how many of my college students expect to find a job this spring when they graduate. Surprised? Read on.

One of the most aggravating experiences I have as a teacher (at two different universities) is the lack of ambition demonstrated by students today and the almost total absence of a professional networking presence on the social web.

Sure everybody is on Facebook, but marketing undergrads are simply not utilizing social media platforms like LinkedIn and blogging to their full potential for business purposes. Last week, I conducted a non-scientific study on LinkedIn use among my undergraduate students and an underwhelming 10% of my students have a LinkedIn Profile! Note students are traditional and non-traditional undergrads, working and non-working, and a mix of majors....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

There are so many ways to connect, network and grow for college students today. Why aren't they taking advantage of it?

Schools struggle to put social media in business curriculum | CBC News | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Marketing experts and professors believe universities aren't working fast enough to include social media in their business curriculum.

Using Facebook and Twitter is one thing but being an expert in it is another, said one University of Windsor marketing professor.

'By the time you get a curriculum up, it's already passé.'— Vincent Georgie, marketing professor

Vincent Georgie said businesses are hungry for social media marketing graduates. However, schools are struggling to work it into their curriculum.

"It's definitely being worked in, it's just not being worked in fast enough," he said. "By and large, it's something that changes quickly. By the time you get a curriculum up, it's already passé."...

Information Vs. Knowledge Vs. Experience

Information Vs. Knowledge Vs. Experience | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The perfect opportunity you keep picturing in your head? That’s your ego protecting you from change — the feeling of pain and failure that is deliberate practice and experimentation.

There’s no question that self-education has never been easier. We can consume countless blog posts, articles, books, videos, TED talks, and Reddit AMAs. We take MOOCs, and can study along with course syllabuses from Ivy League universities. It’s awesome. And best of all, no one can criticize effort spent on becoming informed.

But there is a dark side to this glut of free information. It’s enabled a whole industry of self-help gurus, life coaches, and social media marketers to sell snake oil to the masses, tricking people–people who genuinely want to improve their lives–into thinking they can get something for nothing.

I would never discourage someone from learning, especially extra-curricular learning. I’ll just say that it’s only an education (in the schooling vs. education sense of the word) if that learning is turned into knowledge....

Good read and inspiration for thoughtful business people and new graduates.

It's an early beta but looks promising for making more interesting presentations. Not at "swoopy" as Prezi (that's good).
