Everything You Need to Know About The Latest Twitter Features | Buffer | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Over recent months, there has been a lot of debate about the future of Twitter.

Growth has halted, share prices have fallen, and some are even saying #RIPTwitter.

With all that in mind, the future of Twitter still feels extremely exciting, though. It feels like something big is afoot. And in order to kickstart growth and get people excited again, Twitter has been rolling out a range of great new features and updates.

In this post, I’d love to give you the lowdown on Twitter’s newest features and also share some thoughts on where it may be heading in the future.

Ash Read offers his point of view on new Twitter features and futures.

Why Twitter Should Not Algorithmically Curate the Timeline | Medium

Why Twitter Should Not Algorithmically Curate the Timeline | Medium | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...So, why the distaste for a change that would benefit many of them? It’s simple: Twitter’s uncurated feed certainly has some downsides, and I can see some algorithmic improvements that would make it easier for early users to adopt the service, but they’d potentially be chopping off the very—sometimes magical—ability of mature Twitter to surface from the network. And the key to this power isn't the reverse chronology but rather the fact that the network allows humans to exercise free judgment on the worth of content, without strong algorithmic biases. That cumulative, networked freedom is what extends the range of what Twitter can value and surface, and provides some of the best experiences of Twitter....

Don't Get Seduced by the Latest Social-Media Gadget | PR News | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The next shiny new thing in social media isn't necessarily a slam dunk.... Looking at Vine, there are some trends indicating that the Twitter-owned product has established itself as a worthwhile endeavor for communicators.

Unruly recently conducted a study using 10 million Vine submissions as its data set and determined the following:

- An average of 5 Tweets per second contain a Vine link.

- 4% of the top 100 tracked Vines is branded content.

- Weekends are the most popular time to share Vines.

- According to Unruly co-founder, Matt Cook, vines that evoke emotional response are shared most frequently.

On the flip side, Facebook has demonstrated how a new social-media product can land with a veritable thud. The company’s Home app has been described as a “flop,” and many are describing the smartphone home screen app as “too intrusive” and “pushy.”...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

What's a PR/marketing pro to do? There's never a shortage of new technology and tools. The challenge is to pick and choose the right ones, at the right time, for the best results. And to recognize that not every technology or tool works for every company/product/service every time.

When the pope retires, his Twitter account will be smashed along with his papal ring, Vatican Radio announced Friday. His account, @Pontifex, garnered nearly 1.6 million followers since he sent his first tweet in December. Until 1842, the papal ring was used to seal official documents — and destroyed in the presence of senior Vatican officials to prevent it from being used to seal forged ones. The Twitter account is being deleted for similar reasons, in light of the recent account-hacking incidents. Before @pontifex is deleted, we revisit some of Pope Benedict’s most retweeted missives....

Twitter improves its search function

Twitter improves its search function | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Brands use Twitter for many reasons – the social network is one of the fastest growing online services around, it reaches prospects in real-time and while on the go and it serves highly engaged consumers, too. However, searching for past Tweets can be difficult as Twitter limits how far members can scroll back. Well, it used to impose a limit.

In a recent blog post, Twitter’s Paul Burstein announced that with new updates to the network’s Android, iOS and mobile web apps, a few additional edits were made to its services. The company has developed a way to include older Tweets in on-site searches, so members can navigate farther back than ever before to view important and relevant media. Want to check out that highly effective Tweet that generated responses from thousands of followers last June? Twitter now makes it easy....

Tell me you love me: use of 'favouriting' on Twitter soars | Econsultancy

Tell me you love me: use of 'favouriting' on Twitter soars | Econsultancy | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Do you favourite tweets on Twitter? Has your use of this feature increased over the last year?

If the answer is yes, then you are not alone.

A graph from Isaac Hepworth demonstrates exactly how favouriting on Twitter has increased over the last 12 months. It all stems from the major update to the platform Twitter released in December 2011....

It's interesting to note how a change like this from Twitter, albeit a fairly significant one, can begin to alter the way people use a network.

Favouriting increased. But, according to Twitter, it increased in a very specific way. It was often @-replies (i.e. messages that were only really intended to be seen by the recipient) that were being favourited more than more general tweets....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

It's an interesting look at the "favoriting" trend as well as a reminder that it can be very useful for curation as well as letting someone know you liked their tweet.

The Twitter Redesign We Would All Love To See | Simply Zesty

The Twitter Redesign We Would All Love To See | Simply Zesty | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Considering how Twitter's main site has seemed to regress in recent times and greater attention has been placed on the mobile app, we've decided to give the site a makeover and show how the site can be improved...

We understand that Twitter is designed more for mobile, but considering how neglected its desktop site feels – and especially since it is its main source of revenue – we decided to take matters into our own hands and present our vision of how Twitter should look and feel.

The Aim

Before starting the redesign, it was important to look at what Twitter does right first and incorporate those features into the new look. For one, its simplicity is its greatest strength, and so the overall aim was to evolve the platform instead of creating an entirely new interface from scratch.

While it’s very tempting to fill the entire page with different columns and boxes to give users more features to interact with, doing so would make the page busier, which would compromise the overall experience. Therefore, we limited the design to two columns and placed tweets on the left-hand column to maintain consistency....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Wow. Just wow! I hope Twitter is watching. This is a wonderful and whimsical "what if?" redesign of our favorite social media channel from the very creative folks at Simply Zesty...

Six days after Megan Fox joined Twitter, the actress pondered why she's using the service. What would you tell her is the purpose of Twitter?
Jeff Domansky's insight:

Of course there's no point, if you have nothing to say and you're not prepared to engage. You're not going to follow one million fans. Twitter isn't for everybody. Neither is Facebook or any other social media channel if you're not ready for a commitment. Credit to her for recognizing it.

Twitter takes new steps to be even more like Instagram |CNET

Twitter takes new steps to be even more like Instagram |CNET | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The microblogging service rolled out a series of new features today that together make it more instantly visual and take it even further past 140 characters.

With a flurry of new features unveiled this afternoon, Twitter appears to be aiming more than ever at mimicking some of the most visual elements of Instagram and Facebook.

The most interesting new feature is one that adds a palette of "top" photos and videos to search results. So, for example, if you search for "sunrise," you see a group of photos above the resulting column of tweets, as well as a row of video thumbnails off to the side.

Clearly, the idea here is that Twitter wants users to see more information than ever before, and far more than just the 140 characters of actual tweets. It's an acknowledgement by Twitter that, more than ever, the richest communications are visual, something that netted Instagram a high nine-figure payday (its acquisition by Facebook) and helps make Facebook so attractive to so many people. While a 140-character tweet can contain a wealth of information -- a new thought, a URL, a retweet -- Twitter is nodding to the fact that when someone is searching for something specific, there's a lot of value in giving them an instant visual treat, even one that dominates the screen....

The Small Business Social Media Roundup [INFOGRAPHIC]...

Did you know that a recent study showed that 36 percent of business leaders over the age of 50 cited lack of knowledge in social media as the greatest barrier that they face?

Furthermore, one in ten say that staff shortages prevent them from pursuing any kind of campaign, and almost half (49 percent) believe that their company doesn’t need social media, largely because they feel it doesn’t fit within their industry.

They’re way off the mark, of course. With very few exceptions, platforms such as Twitter and Facebook can play an important role in the business model of almost every brand type....

How to Respond to People on Twitter: A Simple Guide for Businesses [Infographic]

How to Respond to People on Twitter: A Simple Guide for Businesses [Infographic] | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Thanks to Twitter, businesses are closer to consumers than ever before. Tweets haven't replaced phone calls and handwritten letters, but they've become a popular way for consumers to vocalize their questions, praise, or complaints -- all in plain view of anyone who can find the conversation online.

But customers don't just expect you to read their tweets about you -- they also expect you to reply. According to charts published on Search Engine Watch, 70% of surveyed Twitter users expect a response from brands they reach out to on Twitter. Of those users, 53% want that response in under an hour.

It's important to have a solid strategy for responding to tweets so you can keep your customers happy and drive engagement on Twitter. Should you include a link in your response? How much punctuation (?, !) should you use? Are emoticons off the table?

To help inform your Twitter response strategy, LeadSift gathered data on answers to these questions and more, and culminated them into the visual below. Consider this data in the context of your own brand voice and what you know about your buyers' behavior to develop an action plan when responses come rolling in. And hurry -- your customers are waiting.

Twitter is the new customer service tool, for better or for worse. Here's how to get your strategy ready.

When you sit back and think about how far Twitter has come since it launched in 2006, its rise to glory is impressive. It’s difficult to make your way through a day without seeing a tweet referenced on television, the radio, or on a news website. It doesn’t mean that Twitter is the biggest or most popular company or service in the world, but it does prove that its social impact has reached a level that not many technology companies have reached.

When you want to search for something online, you “Google It.”

When you want to connect with friends, or someone that you just met, you “friend them on Facebook.”

When you want to share your random thoughts with the world, you “tweet it.”...

What Companies Can Learn From my Five Years on Twitter | Trevor Young

What Companies Can Learn From my Five Years on Twitter | Trevor Young | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
As of next month I will have been on Twitter for five years. In social media terms, that’s an eternity. Of all the social web technologies out there, Twitter continues to astound (and confound). For many large companies and organisations,...

Twitter still seems to be a source of worry and angst for senior executives. That’s generally because they’re not on it personally and haven’t got a practical knowledge of how it works and the nuances of the Twitter community in action.

Indeed, late last year digital analytics firm comScore reported that “microblogging (ie the key platforms Twitter and Tumblr) had emerged as a disruptive new force in social networking”. That wasn’t news, of course, merely validation of what we all suspected.

According to comScore, in October last year Twitter had reached one in 10 internet users worldwide, and had grown 59% in that year.

In terms of Australia, SocialMediaNews.com.au estimates Twitter has about 2.11 million users. While this figure is dwarfed by Facebook’s user base of 11+ million Aussies, we need to remember that Twitter is public, real-time – and its users tend to be more connected and influential online than most.

Here are some things I’ve learned from being on Twitter these past five years....
