Is a longer tweet a better tweet? Twitter recently allowed a limited number of users to double the number of characters permitted per tweet to 280—hardly an epic length, but still a significant change for the ultra-short-form social platform. In announcing the change in late September, Twitter said company research showed that users were frustrated by the 140-character limit. If the test is a success, it will get a full rollout. Morning Consult surveyed US internet users about the change this month and found a generally positive response, with those who expressed support clearly outweighing those who did not. Younger users in particular were supportive, with 41% of respondents ages 18 to 29 having at least a somewhat positive reaction to the change, and just 14% expressing reservations....
Political viewers of all stripes have been inundated with news about President Donald Trump, whose immigration policies and potential ties to Russia have sparked controversy while his tweets routinely set digital chatter ablaze. Socialbakers just wrapped up eight months of research, looking at Twitter consumption around Trump-related subjects in six countries and offering eye-opening insights into just how immersed consumers have become in all things Donald. "Audiences are tuning in more, but polarization means you’re seeing a lot of negative reactions to political statements,” noted Moses Velasco, chief product evangelist at the Prague, Czech Republic-based tech agency. Despite the raw, public discourse, media brands have undoubtedly benefitted: CNN, Fox News and MSNBC saw double-digit TV ratings gains in May, while subscriptions for The Washington Post and The New York Times have jumped considerably. Here, Socialbakers’ statistics spotlight the impact of Trump’s Twitter. (And if you keep scrolling past the infographic, you will see a video with SocialBakers founder Jan Rezab analyzing the data.)...

Everybody gets a little stuck sometimes. Not sure what kind of visual would go best with your next tweet? One of these classics is sure to do the trick....
When more than 9,000 tweets are published per second, it can be hard to find great content on the platform. So in 2015, Twitter rolled out Twitter Moments -- curated tweets revolving around a single topic or story, all in one place.
Initially, only Twitter and its editorial partners, such as BuzzFeed and The New York Times, could curate Moments. Last year, however, Twitter opened up Moments for all Twitter users. Now, all content creators on the platform can compile groups of tweets. Whether it’s about an event, a campaign, or a pop culture moment, marketers can take advantage of this feature and potentially get discovered by new followers.
In this blog post, we’ll dive into the 411 on Twitter Moments, how to create them, and how brands can use them....

Data has never been more important to marketers, which is why it is always all the more alarming when it's suggested that a platform is delivering false analytics. Approximately 15% of Twitter accounts — some 48 million — are bots rather than people, according to new research from the University of Southern California and Indiana University. While the research is troubling news for Twitter, which has struggled to elevate its user base in the face of growing competition; it is perhaps more frustrating for marketers who trusted the engagement data.
The report elaborates on the percentage of bots, by stating that complex bots could have shown up as humans in their model, "making even the 15% figure a conservative estimate."
And while Twitter has dabbled with restrictions on visibility in the past (with features like the Quality Filter), they’ve never reached as far as some of Facebook’s tweaks (like code that predicts the authenticity of a status update).
Now that Twitter faces more accusations of enabling abuse than ever, though, they’re introducing new measures that will make certain kinds of Tweets less immediately visible in the timeline.
Among other things, Twitter’s most recent update will target what they call “low-quality Tweets” – but what does that mean, exactly?...
Jack asked us for ideas on how to fix Twitter. A coherent plan for fixing Twitter would make millions of people happier, and pick up a billion dollars in market cap along the way. C’mon, it’ll be great!
Listen, it’s almost 2017, so it’s absurd to still be writing “how to save Twitter” thinkpieces. But I’m an eternal optimist, a fan of Twitter right from the start (no seriously, it says so on the company blog) and I don’t have time to go fix Twitter since I’m busy with my new job at Fog Creek now. So, Jack: I’ll give you this one for free, just because I still have a soft spot in my heart for the product and I really want us all to stop having to rescue Twitter in 2017. Here’s the short version:
- Show you can consistently ship new features
- Directly handle abuse and tell the world what you’re doing
- Stop using meaningless metrics as your measure of success
- Provide specific tools for each of your types of users
- Decide if you give a damn about developers or not....

MSN’s global web properties will now feature a Tweet as their breaking news banner. Whether it’s LeBron James Tweeting his move to the Cleveland Cavaliers or breaking news from a trusted account on Twitter like the New York Times, MSN.com visitors will see news in the form of a Tweet. Many of these Tweets will come from news organizations such as The New York Times (@nytimes), The Wall Street Journal (@WSJ), The Washington Post (@washingtonpost), @CNN, @AOL in the U.S.; Yomiuri Shimbun (@Yomiuri_Online) and Asahi Shimbun (@asahi) in Japan;@SkyNews, The Guardian (@guardian) and The Telegraph (@Telegraph) in the UK; @NDTV and Hindustan Times (@htTweets) in India; and @Le_Figaro and Le Monde (@lemondefr) in France. With reach like that, businesses around the world are smart to continue using and innovating on Twitter -- and adapting to the way people use it. Nowadays, 82% of active Twitter users log on using the mobile app rather than logging on via desktop. Just under 63% of U.S. Twitter users get their news on Twitter. And, impressively, Twitter's paid ad engagement grew 208% from 2015 to 2016. How else are people using Twitter nowadays? How are businesses using Twitter? How does the network impact people's purchasing decisions, and how do promoted tweets boost offline sales? And does it change how connected people feel to a brand? For answers to these questions and more, check out the infographic below from WebpageFX. It includes some great research and insights into user behavior and how Twitter affects businesses. The days of Twitter limiting messages to 140 characters — a signature of the social network since its launch in 2006 — may be numbered.
Twitter said on Tuesday that it would begin a test with a random sample of users allowing them to send tweets that are as long as 280 characters, double the existing cap, in most languages around the world.
The San Francisco-based company has stood by its short messages as a defining characteristic — like chirps from a bird, which is the company logo — even as users found ways around the limit, such as posting photos of text.
In a blog post on Tuesday, Twitter said its emphasis on brevity would never change but that the company wondered whether people could express themselves easily enough on the service, and wondered whether that was hurting its popularity.
Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) introduced legislation Monday to classify presidential social media posts — including President Trump's much-discussed tweets — as presidential records. The Communications Over Various Feeds Electronically for Engagement (COVFEFE) Act, which has the same acronym as an infamous Trump Twitter typo last month, would amend the Presidential Records Act to include "social media." Presidential records must be preserved, according to the Presidential Records Act, which would make it potentially illegal for the president to delete tweets. ...

And what are Twitter’s tips for creating the most eye-catching, share-worthy Moments you possibly can?Let’s take a closer look!...
Twitter’s transformation into a TV network is edging ever closer with the company’s announcement that it is teaming up with Bloomberg to create a 24/7 news streaming service directly on the social network. The move comes as little surprise given Twitter’s recent escapades in the video-streaming realm. The company announced last week that 800 hours of live premium video were watched by 45 million viewers in Q1 2017, up 31 percent on the previous quarter, with myriad video partnerships over the past 12 months helping drive new users to the platform. Last year, Twitter won the rights to stream Thursday night NFL games, and it also partnered with BuzzFeedfor a U.S. presidential election livestream and nabbed some PGA golf coverage. More recently, it has signed video deals across sports, esports, and politics, and it’s also preparing to begin producing original content. Ahead of its Q1 earnings announcement last week, Twitter revealed that it eventually plans to stream video 24/7, and it now seems the first of those deals is already in place. The as-yet-unnamed new service is expected to begin operating this fall, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, and will extend beyond Bloomberg’s existing TV news coverage by mixing broadcasts from its global news outlets with a “curated and verified mix of video” from Twitter’s users....
