Study: Social Media Overtakes TV as Main Source of News for 18-24

Study: Social Media Overtakes TV as Main Source of News for 18-24 | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The 18-24 crowd has used the internet as its primary source for news for several years. Now it is specifying “social media” as its main source of news, with that niche overtaking television for the first time.

The information comes from a study done by The Oxford University Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. It looked at consumers of news and information around the world for its “Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2016.” This is the fifth year it has issued such a report. It’s a fascinating read.

28 percent of 18-24 year-olds say social media is their main source of news, compared to 24 percent who cite television.

Since 2013, the number of people in the US who say they get their news from social media has doubled—46 percent now use social media for news....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Social media is becoming the go-to source for news. And users aren't as interested in video as publishers want them to be.

Digital Media's Consumption Growth Slowing; So Is Traditional's Decline

Digital Media's Consumption Growth Slowing; So Is Traditional's Decline | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Digital media’s consumption growth rate in the U.S. continued to slow last year, while the rate of decline in traditional media use (dominated by television, of course) also slowed.

Driven by higher smartphone and tablet penetration, new gaming console launches, and the draw of major political and sporting events, U.S. digital media usage rose 7.1%, to 18 hours per week, in 2015, according to PQ Media’s Global Consumer Media Usage & Exposure Forecast 2015-19.

Tahat's lower than the 9.6% increase in digital media usage in 2014 (to 16.8 hours per week). Further, the projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2015 through 2019 -- 7.3% -- is barely above 2015’s growth rate. That CAGR will result in an average 23.9 hours per week of digital media consumption by 2019....

Google pours $30 million into European news tech companies | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Pouring gas on the bonfire of news tech, Google recently announced that it has distributed more than €27 million ($30 million) into projects spanning the European news tech scene.

The fund’s goal is to ‘help stimulate innovation in digital journalism’ over the next three years, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai said at an event in Paris last week. This batch of project endowments is the first from a €150 million ($167 million) fund the company announced last year.

“The funding will go to a wide variety of organizations”, Pichai said, describing the companies applying for the Digital News Initiative (DNI) funds as “wonderfully diverse, ranging from automated content personalization and robot journalism, to hoax-busting apps and tools to verify social media in real-time reporting....
