Instagram users turn flash into cash, as companies eye new advertising market | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Seen through the filter of Instagram, the world is a beautiful place: high-contrast blue skies; sepia-tinted sunsets; exquisite plates of food and raindrops sliding down windows in perfect formation. It may be a manipulated perspective on life, but 200 million people across the world now use the photo app, sharing 60m pictures a day. Yet for some users, Instagram is generating more than appreciative likes and comments as they document their lives, travels and eating habits on their smartphones.

From Nike to the Namibian tourist board, brands and organisations are turning to the most followed users in the pursuit of a broader and younger audience – and are paying handsomely for their services.

Cue the rise of the Instagram professionals, users who began using the app for fun but are now earning six-figure salaries and being flown around the world to take photos to share with their thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands, of followers....

The big bucks have arrived and Instagram and some smart content pros are capitalizing.

Getting to the Heart of the Matter on Instagram

Getting to the Heart of the Matter on Instagram | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Photo-sharing site Instagram can be worth a lot more to brands constantly trying to cut through the clutter. ... But PR execs have to look at Instagram in a different light, according to Matt Rozen, group manager of corporate social media at Adobe.

The photo-sharing site, which Facebook acquired last year for $1 billion, isn’t necessarily designed to draw people to a different Web destination, but play directly to their emotional center.

“I don't think people click on links in Instagram comments, nor do I think people will take action” if there is a call to action embedded in the picture, said Rozen. “People look at Instagram for a quick fix, a laugh, to be inspired or even to be surprised.”

The challenge for PR pros is how to convert words that take up a good part of the daily PR traffic into images that will enhance their messages....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This post will get you re-thinking how you can use the power of visuals to enhance your content. Also, it nicely balances the pros and cons of Instagram and other photo sharing sites.

I agree Tegan. This is very interesting how they see social media in a completely different way as to how i see it. I see it as a way of sharing photos with my friends, not targeting their emotions.
Analiese Rands's comment August 12, 2013 8:21 PM
Instagram is a site used to share images with friends and i agree with Tegan. Businesses see social media in a different way than us as we only use instagram for fun.
Gorretti Lili Hakalo Vea's comment, August 21, 2013 6:05 AM
I agree with tegan. I don't get how PR people can see it in that way. I myself have recently joined instagram and I don't believe that it has any means to target emotions

[Study] 6 Image Qualities Which May Drive More Likes on Instagram

[Study] 6 Image Qualities Which May Drive More Likes on Instagram | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

For brands on Instagram, Likes don’t just represent engagement, they represent permission! Consumers who are liking an image that a brand produces are, in essence, inviting the brand into their life and acknowledging the brand’s creativity. Ultimately, this helps to create a more emotional connection. In effect, your brand is now in a screen along with consumers’ best friends.

Given the power of the “double-tap” on Instagram, Curalate was interested in discovering which types of image characteristics may drive more likes. In order to do so, we looked at a range of image features across 8,000,000 Instagram photos — including lightness, color, texture and background ratio — and found a few interesting results (see below). And although our data says what and not necessarily why, we have a strong hypothesis on the reasoning behind some of the results…

For instance, we found that images with a single dominant hue performed best. This is probably due to the fact that when you’re viewing an image just mere inches from your face, the absence of chaos can help you focus. Additionally, the fact that textured images generated more engagement could mean that various ridges and shadows grab eyeballs and cause a user to stop and take a harder look at a photo....

These is a great way to get people to like your page and get them to  look at your page regularly. There were a few ways that I felt would help gets consumers attention. If you add contest regularly people will be looking on your page more often. It doesn't have to be a big prize but if you give away something that will get peoples attention. Also I really like the idea of using direct (private) messaging. This makes followers feel like they have a part in the company. That is very important because it makes them feel special and it helps you stand out from other companies.

Brands Crowdsource Product Shoots via Instagram

Brands Crowdsource Product Shoots via Instagram | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

In a world increasingly filtered through Instagram, a carefully crafted photo shoot starts to look dated. That's why retailers are rushing to crowdsource their product shots — harvesting a stream of photos from social platforms to help sell everything from West Elm couches to Coach handbags.

The photos are typically curated in galleries, where each picture is linked to a page selling the product. Increasingly, the amateur images are also showing up directly on product pages, next to professionally styled pictures.

"The path to purchase has evolved tremendously, and consumers are much more likely to trust their peers than a brand," said Mimi Banks, director of social media at L'Oreal's Lancome brand....

Here are the top four reasons why...
