Former Google+ designer slams the service for being 'Facebook lite'

Former Google+ designer slams the service for being 'Facebook lite' | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Google+ is a social network "adrift at sea," representing a big missed opportunity for the company, a former Google employee who worked on the service says.

Chris Messina, who worked on Google+ user experience design before leaving the company over a year ago, wrote a long post on Medium, in which he criticizes the service for not delivering on its initial vision of empowering users with the vast amount of data that Google collects about them.

He also calls out Google+ for not having any meaningful differentiators over its more successful competitor, Facebook. "Most people would likely describe Google+ as a newsfeed, a kind of Facebook-lite," he wrote....

In my opinion, Google+ should steer clear from trying to be like Facebook. Facebook is such a successful social media platform that other platforms should not try to compete with. Google+ has its own tools and benefits in which users could use for different reasons then Facebook. Don't make consumers chose which one is best, allow them to use both for different reasons.

Google Is Reportedly Set To Carve Up Its Failed Social Network Google+ | Business Insider | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Google may kill its social network, Google+, following Vic Gundotra's departure.Google is reportedly planning to dismantle its social network, Google+. Google will consider Google+ a platform rather than a product, TechCrunch reports, citing "multiple sources.

"This means that it will no longer exist as a social network aimed at competing with Facebook, but it still might be integrated into Google's existing products. The company has allegedly been shifting the teams that used to be at "the core" of Google+ and is moving more talent toward the Android team....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

How about you? Did Google Plus ever really, truly excite you or was it just another social media channel you had to try to find a use for just because it was Google? I'm not afraid to admit it's certainly been like that for me and I'm all early-adopter-social-dude.

It will be fascinating to watch how Google handles Google Plus in the future. So far, they are failing to stay ahead of the story in terms of their communication and reputation management.

wanderingsalsero's curator insight, April 28, 2014 3:08 AM

I must admit that I'm one of those people who was kind of irritated when I started to hear that Google+ was ANOTHER social network I had to worry about.  As if Facebook wasn't enough pain-in-the-ass.  However, I will admit also that any property that Google has is probably going to be impossible to ignore simply because they clearly are going to give it preferential treatment (just like Blogger).

As Google+ has over 300m active users (and growing), I am always keen to learn how I can use the platform more effectively. This week, I was very lucky to catch up with Google+ guru Martin Shervington in a Hangout before his talk at Social Media Marketing World. The downside of a Google Hangout was that I could see he was on the sunny West Coast of the US while I was sitting in the dark in London, but on the positive side I learned a huge amount about how to maximise my use of Google+. Martin also shared his advice for people new to the platform.

Google Plus and Opportunity | Social Media Today | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Despite the fact that it's the fastest-growing social networking site around – and the one that might have the biggest potential going forward because of the support it gets from the world's most popular search engine – a lot of business owners, executives, and marketers just don't understand Google+ (also known as Google Plus or G+) as well as they would like to.

In fact, many are a lot less familiar with Google+, and its features, than they are social sites like Facebook and Twitter that could have, arguably, less online marketing power. In one sense, this is only natural. Google+ is still the newest of these sites, and its features and buzzwords change more rapidly than the others do. Still, if you're serious about generating leads from your business website, there isn't any excuse for failing to put together a comprehensive social media marketing plan, Google+ included....

64 Google+ Content Strategies | Copyblogger | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Google+ isn’t only a social network. It’s the very backbone (and future) of Google itself. As Brian Clark wrote yesterday, authorship and the possible effects on the Google algorithm have the potential to be extremely beneficial to savvy content creators. If you’re a writer, this is either going to be very good for your career, or you’ll risk becoming relatively invisible online.

If you’d like to land solidly in the former camp of writers, the question becomes one of how to use Google+ to further your own goals. With that in mind, I’ve put together an infographic for you that outlines 64 strategies that every writer and content producer can put into action, and start reaping the rewards of intelligently engaging with Google+....

How marketers can make use of Google+

How marketers can make use of Google+ | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Google+ has gotten a bad rap. In April, TechCrunch’s Alexia Tsotis and Matthew Panzarino called the social network the “walking dead” and a whole slew of other media outlets began publishing their takes on whether it would ever be able to gain any traction among its users.

From the sounds of things, a lot of marketers would rather focus on the host of other networks out there, like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and so on. But when small businesses and marketing firms ignore Google+, they’re actually throwing away a potential gem of self-promotion, says Phil Penton, president of Social Integration, a Chicago-based digital marketing agency....

The news yesterday that Vic Gundotra, Google’s Senior Vice President of Social, is leaving comes as little surprise. I read about it on Facebook first, then on Twitter, then on Secret, and then on Google+, which perhaps says everything about the success of Google’s most recent foray into social. Google+’s momentmay have passed, but the lessons to be learned will last a lifetime for me, and for the hundreds of others who played a role in building it.

The Coming Death of GoogleToday, it can be hard to imagine that Google faced a deep existential threat to its business three years ago. The company’s financials were as strong as always, but there was a growing cacophony among bloggers and the wider media over the future of the company in the throes of an industry rapidly changing due to social, local and mobile. Google was still primarily a web-based company, the bulk of its revenues derived from advertising that had failed to deeply penetrate any of these three nascent verticals....

Social media marketing is still critically important to a thriving online presence. Many businesses and entrepreneurs experience fatigue over the number of networks that are available en masse. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest… and more recently, and critically, Google+.

Creating content, managing engagement, and taking all the other necessary steps to get things done is exhausting, even for a business that picks and chooses its networks. Still, when Google rolled out Google+, it was clearly time to pay attention.

On a first look, many people feel that engaging with other social networks is much more intuitive than approaching Google+ for the first time. They’ve been around awhile. There’s plenty of guides and good role models for how to handle Facebook and Twitter like a pro. Ignoring Google+ isn’t an option, though. From gaining exposure for your business and content to improving your search engine rankings, an active Google+ account is a must. Why should you care about Google Author Rank? Alone it will not make your search efforts sink or swim, but content creators who use it see great rewards.

While some may call Authorship “Klout Lite,” it does represent Google’s attempt to determine author strength so they can validate search ranking. Influence will be determined by social network validation online, including the Google+ network.

The use of Authorship as a search factor creates a strong need for content creators small and large to adapt the rel=”author” tag and feature Google+ as a primary social network on your web site....
